[From $15.00 per hour] Position Overview Shearer Legal Defense Firm, LLC, a criminal-defense practice serving clients throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area, is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Discovery and Litigation Support Assistant. This non-attorney position is primarily responsible for receiving, organizing, tracking, and maintaining discovery and other case materials. The successful candidate must be comfortable managing large volumes of electronic records while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and close attention to deadlines. Because this is a criminal-defense practice, discovery materials may include sensitive or graphic photographs, body-camera footage, surveillance recordings, recorded interviews, medical records, autopsy materials, and other potentially disturbing content. Responsibilities Receive discovery through electronic links, USB drives, discs, email, and other approved delivery methods Promptly save, copy, and upload discovery materials to the appropriate case file Maintain an accurate discovery log documenting when materials were received, their source, and where they are stored Organize discovery using the firm's file-naming and folder-management procedures Inventory files and compare received materials against discovery indexes, notices, and correspondence Identify missing, inaccessible, corrupted, duplicated, or improperly labeled files Promptly report missing materials and discrepancies to the supervising attorney Track outstanding discovery requests and follow up as directed Download, label, and organize police reports, body-camera footage, photographs, recorded interviews, surveillance videos, forensic reports, and other evidence Create working copies of discovery while preserving original files Assist with preparing discovery and exhibits for attorney review, client meetings, motions hearings, and trials Maintain the secure electronic and physical storage of confidential case materials Update discovery-related tasks and deadlines in the firm's case-management system Prepare routine discovery correspondence and follow-up communications Assist with preparing exhibit lists, witness files, trial notebooks, and other litigation-support materials Coordinate with courts, prosecutors' offices, investigators, experts, and other agencies as directed Qualifications High School Diploma or G.E.D required Exceptional attention to detail Strong organizational and electronic file-management skills Ability to follow written procedures consistently Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines without losing track of assignments Proficiency with computers, cloud storage, email, Microsoft Office, PDF software, and electronic file systems Ability to learn new software and troubleshoot routine file-access issues Excellent written and verbal communication skills Sound judgment and a strong commitment to protecting confidential information Dependable attendance, punctuality, and follow-through Ability to work independently while promptly raising questions or concerns Ability to handle sensitive and potentially graphic criminal-case materials professionally Prior experience in a law office, public defender's office, prosecutor's office, court, law-enforcement agency, or litigation-support setting is preferred but not required. Familiarity with MyCase or another legal case-management platform is a plus. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is methodical, technologically capable, dependable, and naturally inclined to verify that work is complete and accurate. The successful candidate will understand that missing, mislabeled, or overlooked discovery can have serious consequences for a client and will approach every assignment with care and urgency. This person should be comfortable taking ownership of assigned discovery-management and litigation-support responsibilities while working under the direction and supervision of an attorney.
