Justice EmpowerED partners with families, students, and communities to protect every child's right to public education, justice, and safety through free legal services, advocacy, training, and systems-change strategies. Reporting to the Managing Attorney, the Legal Assistant serves as a primary administrative support for Justice EmpowerED attorneys and helps ensure clients receive timely, organized, and responsive support. The position may also provide administrative support to Action4Equity as needed. Office Purpose Justice EmpowerED works alongside families, students, and communities to address barriers within the public education system through: Direct legal services Education rights advocacy Family and community education Legal and policy research Community partnerships Systems-change strategies The Legal Assistant provides the administrative infrastructure necessary for attorneys and advocates to effectively serve families and advance this work. Core Responsibilities1. Client Intake & Communication Serve as an initial point of contact for Justice EmpowerED clients. Responsibilities Conduct initial client intake calls. Respond to client phone calls and emails. Collect required client information and documentation. Schedule client meetings with attorneys. Communicate professionally and compassionately with families experiencing trauma, crisis, or education-related challenges. Ensure client inquiries are appropriately routed and followed up on. 2. Case & File Management Maintain accurate and organized client records. Responsibilities Open and close Justice EmpowerED cases. Maintain electronic and other client files. Request and obtain confidential client records. Organize records for attorney review. Maintain accurate client and case data. Track required case documentation and administrative deadlines. Protect client confidentiality and sensitive information. 3. Attorney & Legal Administrative Support Provide administrative support to Justice EmpowerED attorneys. Responsibilities Schedule meetings and maintain case-related calendars. Prepare and organize materials for attorney review. Draft preliminary legal documents and correspondence for attorney review. Assist attorneys with case-related administrative tasks. Track follow-up actions and deadlines. Support efficient day-to-day operation of the legal program. 4. Legal & Policy Research Support Justice EmpowerED's legal, policy, and strategic work. Responsibilities Conduct legal research relevant to client matters. Research education laws, policies, regulations, and administrative requirements. Support research related to policy initiatives. Conduct research supporting strategic expansion efforts. Organize findings for attorney review and organizational use. 5. Community Outreach & Education Support Justice EmpowerED's community-facing initiatives. Responsibilities Assist with community outreach. Support Community Partner trainings. Support Parent/Family Education Rights trainings. Coordinate logistics and materials for community events and trainings. Help connect families and community partners with Justice EmpowerED resources. 6. Data, Reporting & Program Administration Support accurate program administration and reporting. Responsibilities Maintain accurate client and program data. Assist with data collection and documentation. Support preparation of internal program reports. Maintain administrative records required for program evaluation and grant reporting. Identify administrative processes that can improve program efficiency. 7. Cross-Organizational Administrative Support Provide administrative support beyond Justice EmpowerED when organizational needs require. Responsibilities Support Action4Equity administrative projects as assigned. Coordinate with Operations, Human Resources, Finance, Communications, and other organizational functions when necessary. Follow Action4Equity administrative policies and procedures. Participate in organizational meetings, trainings, and planning activities as appropriate. Justice EmpowerED remains the position's primary responsibility. Success in This Role Looks Like Within the first three years: Clients experience timely, professional, and compassionate communication. Attorneys have organized and accurate case files and records. Client intake and case-management processes operate consistently. Confidential information is appropriately protected. Attorneys spend more time on substantive legal and advocacy work because administrative processes are well managed. Program data is accurate and available for reporting and evaluation. Community training and outreach activities are effectively supported. Legal and policy research strengthens Justice EmpowerED's direct-service and systems-change work. Ideal Candidate Bachelor's degree or NC Certified Paralegal Certificate. Two years of legal administrative experience preferred. Experience working in a legal services, nonprofit, education, advocacy, or related environment preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children from diverse backgrounds, including individuals experiencing trauma or crisis. Strong time-management and organizational skills. High attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information. Ability to work independently while accepting supervision and direction. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Commitment to systems change and addressing inequities within education.
