Job Description

Overview:
We are seeking a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented Legal Assistant / Law Clerk to join our criminal defense practice. This is a full-time, in-office position working directly with a sole practitioner, offering valuable hands-on experience in criminal law and courtroom litigation. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, possesses strong legal research and writing skills, and is comfortable balancing legal and administrative responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. This position is ideal for a college student, recent graduate, or early-career professional pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Legal Studies, Pre-Law, or a related field who is interested in building a career in the legal profession.
Responsibilities:
Conduct legal research using platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, Decisis, and other legal research databases. Draft legal memoranda, correspondence, motions, and other legal documents under attorney supervision. Organize and maintain physical and electronic case files. Schedule client meetings, court appearances, deadlines, and other appointments. Communicate professionally with clients, court personnel, and other legal professionals. Assist with court filings in both state and federal courts, including electronic filing Attend court proceedings and provide litigation support as needed. Perform administrative tasks including printing, copying, scanning, mailing, filing, faxing, and document management. Assist with case preparation and trial organization. Maintain accurate calendars and ensure all deadlines are met.
Qualifications:
Required:
Currently enrolled in or graduated from a college or university. Strong legal research and legal writing abilities. Exceptional organization and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar). Professional demeanor and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Preferred:
Previous experience working in a law office. Experience using Westlaw, LexisNexis, Decisis, or similar legal research platforms. Paralegal certificate or paralegal coursework (not required). Familiarity with electronic court filing systems.
