Company Overview For more than 60 years, Legal Services of Long Island has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. Legal Services of Long Island has a staff of over one hundred people situated in three offices across Long Island. Job Description LSLI has an immediate opening in our Hempstead office for a full-time paralegal in the Senior Citizen Law Project. Duties The paralegal will prepare Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy forms and will also conduct signing ceremonies. Paralegal will meet with clients in office, at client's home or at facility. Paralegal will prepare paperwork to establish a Medicaid Pooled Trust and gather financial information and medical reports. Paralegal will compile all necessary data for preparation of Quarterly Reports. The paralegal will also transmit information under the supervision of the unit's Supervising Staff Attorney and Staff Attorneys, referrals and brief services to seniors, provide technical assistance and referrals to agencies and other calling or visiting the unit for assistance, provide attorneys with case and litigation support; help conduct community outreach and education for seniors and providers of services to seniors, create and update community educational and training materials, input and maintain records in internal and external case management systems. Requirements Legal Services of Long Island is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income households. Paralegal training or college degree or appropriate prior experience. Excellent oral communication and writing skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, strong attention to detail and organizational ability to prioritize and multitask. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
Pay:
$44,058.00 - $60,000.00 per year
