Job Description

Job Summary SMART-TD's Legal Department is an in-house legal department that represents the organization and its officers in all matters pertaining to the representation of transportation sector employees, including the railroad and bus industries. The practice includes labor and employment law, legislative and regulatory matters, and additional practice areas as required by the needs of the organization. The practice is unique in that the majority of litigation is handled in-house.
SMART-TD
is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented paralegal to join its Legal Department. The ideal candidate will possess strong research and writing skills, and a solid understanding of legal procedures. Familiarity with railroad and/or labor organizations is a plus. The paralegal will provide substantive and administrative support to multiple attorneys and staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsibilities Assisting attorneys with all phases of litigation and case management; Conducting legal research and preparing memoranda; Drafting, reviewing, and proofreading legal documents, correspondence, and filings; Coordinating and scheduling meetings, hearings, and depositions; Communicating with clients, courts, and opposing counsel as needed; Assisting with discovery, including document collection and production; Preparing exhibits and materials for hearings, arbitrations, and trials; Assisting with case file management and organization; Assisting with deadline tracking and litigation calendaring; Processing billing, expenses, and other administrative tasks as needed; and Performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of three years of experience with a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department; experience with a labor organization or supporting labor and employment counsel is a plus. Bachelor's degree in legal studies, paralegal studies, or a related field preferred, or 3-5 years of related experience in lieu of a degree; paralegal certification is strongly preferred. Exceptional multi-tasking skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven self-starter who is innovative and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint), and document management systems. Demonstrated ability to perform legal research and drafting; familiarity with U.S. federal and state employment laws and human resources processes is a plus. Location The office is located in Independence, Ohio. Compensation & Benefits Hourly rate: $28.85-36.06
