+ Ellis is a New Orleans boutique litigation firm of about 20 people. Our attorneys handle insurance defense, personal injury, medical malpractice, construction, commercial, and local-government cases in Louisiana state courts, the Eastern and Western Districts of Louisiana, the Fifth Circuit, and the Louisiana courts of appeal. We are hiring an experienced Litigation Paralegal who wants real responsibility for real cases, in an office that takes the work seriously and itself considerably less so. You will work directly with the partners and attorneys, not through layers of management.
PAY, BENEFITS, AND SCHEDULE
Salary of $62,000 to $80,000+, depending on experience Medical, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with company matching contribution Paid time off and paid holidays Paid parking downtown Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the office, with occasional flexibility on hours or working from home when life requires it
THE CALENDAR IS THE HEART OF THIS JOB
Our litigation calendar will be yours. That means you already know, without looking it up: What to calendar the moment a signed rule to show cause or hearing order arrives: the hearing, the opposition deadline, and our reply deadline, and how many days apply to each. How to circulate a hearing order to all required parties under Louisiana Code of Civil Procedure article 1313, prepare and file the affidavit of service, and calendar the dates that follow.
The post-judgment clocks:
motion for new trial, devolutive appeal, and suspensive appeal. How summary judgment deadlines differ from ordinary state court motion deadlines, and how federal submission and briefing schedules work. Your way around
PACER/CM-ECF. WHAT YOU WILL DO
Prepare, file, and serve pleadings in Louisiana state and federal courts. Draft discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, deposition notices, and notices of service. Monitor incoming PACER filings and calendar everything they trigger. Coordinate document collection and discovery responses with clients. Organize case files, exhibits, and evidence in our cloud-based system. Summarize deposition and hearing transcripts. Support hearings and trials, including the logistics that make them run. Serve as our point of contact with chambers, opposing counsel, sheriffs' offices, and medical providers.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Hands-on litigation paralegal experience in a civil practice, with Louisiana state and federal deadlines second nature to you. A track record of running several active calendars at once without misses. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro (Bates stamping, extraction, form filling, reorganizing). Ownership. When something goes wrong, you say so early, fix it, and adjust. That is how we operate, attorneys included. Reliability and discretion. We plan around each other, and we handle confidential matters all day. Nice to have, not required: Westlaw factual research and e-discovery platform experience.
WHAT IT IS LIKE HERE
We will say this plainly because most law firms cannot: this is a relaxed place to work. Dress is casual unless you are headed to court. We have regular happy hours and outings, and the day-to-day atmosphere is closer to a small team that likes each other than to a traditional law office. The work is high-level and we expect it done well, but we do not confuse long hours with good work. Trial weeks occasionally run long; the rest of the year, 5:00 means 5:00. The firm is growing, and this role grows with it: more complex matters, a senior paralegal path, and a real hand in how we run our cases.
