Position Summary The Fleet Safety Lead will be responsible for leading and enhancing fleet safety initiatives across a nationwide operation of approximately 1,500 company vehicles, primarily medium-duty vans and pickup trucks. This position will develop and oversee a comprehensive fleet safety program focused on reducing vehicle incidents, improving driver performance, and strengthening a company-wide culture of safe driving. The ideal candidate is an experienced fleet safety professional with a strong background in driver training, field coaching, collision prevention, telematics analysis, and safety program development. This role will work closely with operational leaders and field teams to identify risks, implement corrective actions, and continuously improve fleet safety performance. Key Responsibilities Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of the company's fleet safety strategy. Establish and promote a culture in which safe vehicle operation is viewed as a core professional responsibility and expectation. Develop and maintain standardized fleet safety policies, procedures, driver expectations, and accountability processes. Create consistent driver qualification, onboarding, orientation, and refresher training programs. Assess fleet-related risks and develop corrective and preventive actions to reduce vehicle incidents and associated costs. Analyze leading indicators, vehicle telematics, dash-camera information, and other fleet data to identify potential risks before they result in collisions. Monitor collision trends and fleet performance metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Lead or support investigations into fleet accidents and develop appropriate corrective actions to prevent recurring incidents. Deliver classroom and behind-the-wheel driver training at locations throughout the United States. Conduct in-vehicle driver evaluations, ride-alongs, and field observations to assess and reinforce safe driving practices. Train designated branch personnel to conduct driver observations and reinforce fleet safety expectations within their local operations. Coach drivers and field employees on defensive driving, backing techniques, parking lot safety, lane changes, speed control, following distance, hazard identification, distracted driving, adverse weather conditions, fatigue awareness, and applicable vehicle safety requirements. Develop standardized coaching and accountability procedures following preventable vehicle incidents, including individualized driver improvement plans when appropriate. Design engaging initial and ongoing driver training using real-world collision examples, industry best practices, performance data, incident trends, and adult learning techniques. Develop and distribute fleet safety communications, including Safety Alerts, Safety Minutes, driver awareness campaigns, and other educational materials. Establish, monitor, and communicate key performance indicators (KPIs) and leading metrics to measure the effectiveness of the fleet safety program. Support compliance with applicable FMCSA requirements, driver qualification standards, CDL programs, and vehicle safety regulations. Partner with operational and executive leadership to promote ownership and accountability for fleet safety. Identify opportunities to improve the use of telematics and other technology to enhance driver safety and fleet performance. Manage multiple fleet safety initiatives and projects simultaneously while maintaining appropriate documentation and reporting. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Required Qualifications Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in fleet safety, transportation safety, or a related field. Experience supporting multiple geographically dispersed locations. Demonstrated experience delivering classroom and behind-the-wheel driver training. Experience developing fleet safety procedures, policies, and training materials. Experience managing fleet safety programs involving 1,500 or more vehicles preferred. Experience conducting vehicle collision investigations and developing corrective actions. Experience analyzing fleet safety metrics, telematics, dash-camera data, and driver performance trends. Strong understanding of defensive driving principles and fleet risk management. Skills & Competencies Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work will be performed in a combination of office, branch, customer, and field environments. Must be capable of operating company vehicles for training and evaluation purposes. Ability to sit and/or drive for extended periods. Ability to repeatedly enter and exit company vans and pickup trucks. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20%-60% to branches, customer locations, and project sites, depending on business needs. Ability to work outdoors and conduct field observations in varying weather conditions. Ability to perform hands-on driver evaluations and training activities as required.
