Our Safety & Health Internship Program provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while supporting our commitment to protecting people, operations, and the communities we serve. As a Safety & Health Intern, you will work alongside experienced Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) professionals and plant leadership teams to gain practical exposure to safety systems, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, employee engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to real projects that enhance workplace safety while developing the skills needed for a successful career in EHS, manufacturing, or operations leadership. In addition to on-the-job learning, interns will benefit from mentoring, professional development opportunities, networking events, and exposure to career paths across Smurfit Westrock's nationwide manufacturing network. What You'll Do Depending on business needs and location, interns may gain experience in one or more of the following areas: Occupational Safety & Health Industrial Hygiene Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Fire Protection and Hazardous Materials Management Ergonomics and Injury Prevention Process Safety and Risk Management Emergency Preparedness and Response Safety Training and Employee Engagement Incident Investigation and Corrective Action Planning Regulatory Compliance and Auditing Additional responsibilities may include: Assisting with workplace safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments Supporting safety training programs and safety awareness initiatives Participating in incident investigations and root cause analysis activities Analyzing safety metrics and identifying opportunities for improvement Assisting with OSHA compliance efforts and documentation Collaborating with cross-functional teams to promote a strong safety culture Contributing to continuous improvement projects focused on reducing risk and improving operational safety What You Need to
Succeed:
Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in: Occupational Safety & Health Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Industrial Hygiene Environmental Science Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline) Safety Management or related scientific field Strong interest in manufacturing, industrial operations, and workplace safety Effective communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including
Excel, Word, and PowerPoint Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
To perform this role successfully, candidates must be willing and able to: Follow all safety policies, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements Work safely around manufacturing equipment, machinery, forklifts, and industrial processes Navigate manufacturing and warehouse environments, including stairs, ladders, and production areas Work in conditions that may include heat, cold, humidity, dust, noise, and varying temperatures Stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods as needed Why Smurfit Westrock?
