Position Summary The Safety Specialist manages and administers the corporate safety program for assigned construction projects. This role requires independent judgment to ensure regulatory compliance, mitigate field hazards, conduct incident investigations, and deliver specialized safety training.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Level I:
Associate Specialist (Entry Level)
Program Administration:
Administers the Corporate Safety Program for assigned projects; audits implementation effectiveness rather than just "inspecting" conditions.
Risk Engineering:
Facilitates Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs). Use trade/technical knowledge to suggest practical safety controls to crews.
Incident Analysis:
Conducts witness interviews and gathers evidence for investigations. Drafts initial findings for review.
Training:
Delivers established training curricula (OSHA 10, Fall Protection) to workforce groups.
Level II:
Senior Specialist (Para-Professional)
Strategic Planning:
Develops comprehensive safety strategies for high-risk, multi-employer projects (e.g., large civil infrastructure, complex utility ties).
Dispute Resolution:
"Steps up to conflict" to resolve regulatory disputes with Superintendents and Subcontractors independently. Negotiates "paths to compliance" that protect the schedule.
Root Cause Analysis:
Leads complex investigations. Authors final liability reports identifying systemic failures and prescribing organizational changes. Subject Matter Expert (SME): Serves as the technical authority for specific high-hazard scopes (e.g., Excavation, Electrical, Confined Space).
Level III:
Lead Specialist (Professional)
System Design:
Authors and revises the Corporate Safety Manual and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Defines how the company manages safety.
Crisis Command:
automatically assumes command of "Major Incidents" (Fatality, Regulatory Raid) to direct legal defense strategy and agency interface.
Mentorship & Development:
Acts as the "Teacher of Teachers." Evaluates the competency of Level I/II Specialists and designs their professional development plans.
Business Integration:
Participates in pre-bid and pre-construction reviews to engineer safety into the project budget and design before the work begins. Qualifications & Experience Classification into Level I, II, or Lead is based on satisfying the criteria in ONE of the Qualification Tracks (Education, Trade, or Professional) AND demonstrating the required Scope of Authority. Criteria to be discussed upon interview.
Certifications Required:
OSHA 30-Hour Construction Outreach Training. Current First Aid/CPR Certification. Preferred (Required for Senior/Lead Placements): Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
Credentials:
CSP, ASP, CHST, or
OHST. OSHA 500
Construction Trainer Authorization. USACE 24-Hour Fall Protection Competent Person. OSHA 10-Hour Electrical Transmission & Distribution Course. Work Environment & Physical Demands Requires daily traversal of active, multi-employer construction sites. Must be able to navigate uneven terrain, climb structures/ladders, and stand or walk for extended periods. Requires exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions.
