Role
The HSE Safety Specialist anticipates and identifies hazards in systems, equipment, facilities, work sites, and operational procedures; evaluates potential risks; and provides guidance regarding safety, health, and environmental laws, codes, regulations, standards, and company requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport operational leadership on site.
Provide advice and counseling regarding regulatory compliance with safety, health, and environmental laws, codes, regulations, standards, and company requirements.
Inspect workplace facilities, tools, equipment, and machinery to identify and correct deficiencies or potential hazards and ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT safety requirements.
Assist local management with investigations of safety-related damage incidents, employee injuries, occupational illnesses, and motor vehicle accidents to determine causes and contributing factors.
Conduct or facilitate safety training and education programs for supervisory and field employees through formal training classes, safety meetings, and other venues.
Recommend safe work processes and demonstrate personal protective equipment safety features to reduce employee exposure to workplace and environmental hazards.
Ensure tools, equipment, materials, vehicles, and technical instruments are fit-for-purpose, functional, calibrated, and properly equipped with protective equipment and safety systems.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
QualificationsExperience in substation construction preferred.
Must be fluent in Spanish and English.
Associate degree or equivalent related work experience of 4 years.
Knowledge of excavation and trenching.
Knowledge of safe work practices with reference to OSHA standards.
Preferred QualificationsOSHA Outreach Training Instructor (Construction).Current certification or pursuit of certification as a Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP).Knowledge of accident investigation following root cause analysis principles.
Physical Demands & Work EnvironmentThis position operates in a field environment and routinely requires bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and twisting. The role may also involve working in extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
The position requires the ability to bend, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds, along with adequate vision, distance and space judgment, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
