Compensation:

Provision of a fully furnished private bedroom and shared facility access at Lone Pine (inclusive of all utilities, trash, and internet) in exchange for up to seven (7) hours per week of active on-site presence, security response, and emergency availability during nights and weekends. Any authorized or unanticipated active duties exceeding 7 hours per week will be compensated at an hourly rate of $22.00/hour.

POSITION SUMMARY

SoHum Housing Opportunities (SHO) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Live-In Caretaker to serve as a stabilizing, off-hours support and safety presence for our Lone Pine Supportive Housing Program. The Live-In Caretaker resides on-site at the Lone Pine property, which houses SHO's administrative offices, shared resident communal areas, and individual housing units. Acting as the eyes and ears of the facility during nights and weekends, the Caretaker ensures a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all residents when daytime staff are off-duty. While this role does not require scheduled daytime shifts, it requires availability to respond to residents' and facility issues on nights and weekends to assist with facility access and handle emergencies. The ideal candidate brings empathy, strong boundaries, and comfort working directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders (SUDs), mental illness, and physical or intellectual disabilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Off-Hours & Weekend Emergency Response:

Act as the primary on-site point of contact for urgent property or resident issues during overnight, weekend, and non-operational hours.

Weekend Facility Support:

Assist with opening or closing the community kitchen area on weekends, coordinating with scheduled daytime staff to ensure the space is secure and accessible to residents as needed.

Property Security & Monitoring:

Monitor security cameras as needed during off-hours, investigate unusual disturbances, and instruct unauthorized or disruptive visitors to leave the property.

Crisis Escalation:

Assess after-hours situations and contact emergency services (police, fire, medical) or SHO management when critical incidents occur.

Reporting & Documentation:

Maintain a log of off-hours activities and resident interactions. Write and share formal Incident Reports with management in a timely manner whenever emergencies, policy violations, or significant disturbances occur.

Boundary Maintenance:

Recognize that minor issues, non-emergency maintenance, and routine resident complaints should be deferred to regular daytime staff on duty the following day.

Good Neighbor Presence:

Maintain a calm, respectful demeanor, modeling stable behavior and adhering strictly to all Lone Pine property and sobriety guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Experience & Temperament:

Must possess a strong understanding of and comfort level working with highly vulnerable populations, including those experiencing chronic homelessness, severe mental illness, SUDs, and various physical or cognitive disabilities.

Schedule Flexibility & Responsiveness:

Must have a flexible schedule that allows for reliable availability during evenings, overnights, and weekends. Must be consistently accessible and prompt in answering phone calls and text messages from SHO management, daytime staff, or emergency services during off-hours.

Reliability:

High level of personal responsibility and reliability to serve as the designated point of contact during off-hours and weekends.

Communication Skills:

Strong verbal de-escalation skills and the ability to maintain firm, professional boundaries while treating all individuals with dignity and respect.

Writing & Technical Skills:

Ability to write clear, objective, and accurate notes and incident reports. Basic computer skills are required to complete logs and administrative tasks, with experience in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc.) strongly preferred.

Teamwork:

Ability to follow instructions from the Shelter Manager or Director and coordinate with SHO staff on shared information and tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work and residence are based at the Lone Pine property in Southern Humboldt.
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally exposed to outdoor temperatures, dirt, or dust.
• Physical requirements include: walking the property to conduct visual checks, opening/closing facility doors, and the ability to rapidly recognize and respond to dangerous situations or disturbances.

Some work activities may include twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending over at the waist, grasping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and moving, lifting and/or carrying up to 25 pounds to waist height (essential for room turnovers and food prep).

All employees are considered essential service workers and are required to return to work (as ordered) in the event of an emergency.

MANDATORY REPORTING

Because SHO works with individuals in vulnerable housing situations, this position may be classified as a Mandated Reporter under California's Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Appropriate training will be provided, and all legal reporting requirements must be followed.

BACKGROUND CHECK / SCREENING

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check and any other screenings required by law or funding sources. All SHO employees are required to pass a background check.

FUNDING CONTINGENCY

This position is grant-funded. Continued employment and/or residence is strictly contingent upon the ongoing availability of these grant funds and the programmatic needs of the organization.
