Job Description
Public Safety Officer Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has an opening in the Office of Public Safety for a Public Safety Officer. We have been ranked No. 1 among U.S. engineering colleges by the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Guide for the last 27 consecutive years. Our Public Safety Officers provide personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors on Institute property. As a Public Safety Officer, you will provide escort services, and other basic public assistance services as needed, and perform routine security and public safety patrol duties on campus. You will remain alert to emergency situations and provide a first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required. Other duties as assigned to meet the Institute's business needs. Qualified candidates will hold an associate degree in criminology or related field plus a minimum of five years' experience in security, public safety, law enforcement, emergency services, or military experience required. In lieu of a higher education degree, a high school diploma and seven or more years' of experience in a public safety field will be accepted. Higher-level degrees in relatable fields may be considered in lieu of years of experience. Successful completion of pre-employment screenings that include a background check, motor vehicle report, and physical ability assessment are required of the selected finalist(s). In addition to the aforementioned qualifications, preferred candidates will demonstrate an ability to: successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; complete routine paperwork; understand and follow specific instructions and procedures; react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures; ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel. Preferred candidates will also have strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation; skill in performing building security and lock procedures; knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations; skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus. Pay Range is $18.50/hour - $22.50/hour. Pay is competitive. A higher pay may be negotiated based on experience and qualifications.
