Aug 31, 2026 Job Description Position Summary The Somerville High School Evening Door and Building Monitor is responsible for monitoring the main entrance of a school building, screen visitors enforcing security policies and for maintaining a professional and courteous relationship with the staff, children, and families in the program while also overseeing appropriate use of the building during weekday evening hours. Essential Functions & Responsibilities The essential functions or responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position Monitor the front entrance and, if applicable, other designated, exterior doors/gates. Ensure doors are not propped open and remain locked. Verify identification, check in visitors and if applicable, issue passes following school policy. Assist students, staff and visitors entering the school building and direct individuals to the appropriate location within the school building. Conduct regular checks of the school building including hallways and restrooms. Monitor security cameras, if applicable. Report, manage, and/or diffuse, potential safety threats or unauthorized individuals, including the removal of unauthorized persons from school building. Redirect people from unauthorized locations in the building Coordinate with night custodial staff to ensure the building is fully cleared of visitors each evening. Maintain visitor logs and report maintenance or safety concerns. Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills Ability to communicate effectively in all aspects of the job. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to make judgments and work under high levels of stress. Must be cooperative, congenial, and service oriented. Must be courteous and able to effectively manage job responsibilities. Ability to follow written and verbal directions, to read and write, to handle multiple tasks and prioritize them appropriately, and to exercise good judgment. Ability to recognize areas of concern and propose and/or recommend appropriate solutions to the problem. Must possess active listening skills. Must possess conflict mediation skills. Maintains a high level of professionalism in all interactions with public, students and school staff.
