06/24/2026 This is a Civil Service position. Applicants must either currently be active on a School Safety Officer Civil Service list or will be required to take the Civil Service test and score in the top three (3).
SALARY:
$50,000.00 (with pension waiver extension)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position involves responsibility for the safety of students and staff. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the rules and policies of the school are followed. They shall assist the school administration and staff in establishing and maintaining a safe school environment. Direct supervision is received from the school administrators in accordance with established policies and procedures. The incumbent does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
(illustrative only) Maintain order and compliance with the school district's code of conduct, policies and rules and regulations; Monitors student activity in hallways and around school grounds to deter dangerous or inappropriate behavior; Observes and reports problems or suspicious and potentially dangerous activities that may affect the security of the school's building and grounds; Updates safety plans for the building and ground; Attends Safety Committee meetings; Controls presence of visitors and prevents any unauthorized persons from entering school grounds; Accompanies and acts as a witness for school administration during locker searches; Prepares any necessary paperwork.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to maintain order and the safety and security of the students and staff; working knowledge of school district rules and regulations; ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out duties; ability to effectively communicate orally as well as in writing; ability to deal effectively with school administration, staff, students and the public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate's degree and 1 (one) year experience as a Deputy Sheriff, Police Officer, NYS Police or NYS Park Police; or (B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 3 (three) years of experience as a Deputy Sheriff, Police Officer, NYS Police or NYS Park Police; or (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (A) and (B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Appointees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job. A fingerprint supported criminal background check is mandatory for perspective employees of a school district.
REQUIREMENTS TO CARRY OR POSSESS FIREARMS
School Safety Officers may not carry or possess firearms while on duty unless authorized to do so by the appointing authority and a license has been issued pursuant to §400.00 of Penal Law (§2.10.27 of Criminal Procedure Law). Where possession of the license is required, eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment. Pistol permit is required.
