Job Description
Join the Cumberland County Public Library team and help inspire a love of learning, reading, and discovery among youth in our community. This position plays a key role in providing engaging library services, readers' advisory, and innovative programs for children and teens from birth through grade 12. The selected candidate will lead and support Youth Services staff while collaborating with library leadership to develop new programs, services, and community initiatives that meet the evolving needs of Cumberland County residents. In this role, you will also serve as a branch leader in the absence of the Branch Manager and may contribute to system-wide projects such as grant management, collection development, and service innovation. Supervises, hires, trains, evaluates, and schedules Youth Services staff to ensure efficient operations and high-quality customer service Provides leadership and support to staff while ensuring compliance with library policies, procedures, and service standards Assists customers with reference questions, readers' advisory, and access to library resources and services Supports customers with technology assistance, including the use of computers, digital resources, and library equipment Serves as branch supervisor in the absence of the Branch Manager to maintain continuity of daily operations Develops, implements, and evaluates engaging and age-appropriate programs for youth from birth through grade 12 Plans and coordinates outreach programs and special events that support literacy, learning, and community engagement Promotes Youth Services programs through outreach efforts, including school visits, childcare center visits, community fairs, and public presentations Collaborates with community agencies and organizations that serve youth to expand library partnerships and services Manages and participates in outreach events, including the preparation and transportation of program materials, displays, flyers, and signage Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in library science and one (1) year of professional library experience, preferably including six months of supervisory experience.
Manager's Preference:
Experience in providing services to youth. A demonstrated ability to manage a grant-related project with minimal supervision. Knowledge of current library materials, literature trends, emerging technologies, and developments in library services Knowledge of modern library operations, policies, procedures, and best practices Knowledge of established cataloging, serials, acquisitions principles, practices, and methods Knowledge of relevant periodicals, newspapers, and electronic resources within assigned service areas Skill in using OCLC software and automated public catalog and circulation systems to perform library functions Skill in understanding, applying, and assigning subject headings and indexing schemes Ability to interpret and analyze a wide variety of data, information, and variables with accuracy and sound judgment Ability to communicate ideas and information effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, customers, community partners, and the public Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned dutiesConditions of Employment:

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire. Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
