We are seeking a skilled and dependable Garbage Truck Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair a fleet of refuse collection vehicles and related equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy-duty vehicle maintenance. The Garbage Truck Mechanic will help ensure vehicles are safe, reliable, and available for daily collection operations by performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical problems, and completing repairs efficiently. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspections on garbage trucks, refuse collection vehicles, and related equipment. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and driveline components. Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and compacting mechanisms. Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems, including wiring, sensors, lighting, and vehicle controls. Inspect vehicles for safety, mechanical condition, and compliance with applicable regulations. Perform scheduled oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, fluid checks, and other preventive services. Repair and maintain refuse collection bodies, compactors, lift mechanisms, and automated or semi-automated collection systems. Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and specialized heavy-duty repair equipment. Accurately document inspections, repairs, parts used, and maintenance activities. Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform emergency or roadside repairs when required. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA, DOT, and environmental requirements. Communicate vehicle conditions and repair needs with fleet supervisors and operations personnel. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous experience repairing heavy-duty trucks, diesel vehicles, refuse trucks, or similar equipment preferred. Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy-duty vehicle components. Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation. Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Valid driver's license required. CDL Class A or B preferred, depending on company requirements. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry heavy parts and equipment. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined or awkward positions for extended periods. Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions when necessary. Ability to safely operate shop equipment, tools, and lifting equipment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Work Environment This position typically works in a fleet maintenance facility or vehicle repair shop. The mechanic may occasionally work outdoors or at roadside locations. The work environment may involve exposure to diesel exhaust, grease, oils, hydraulic fluids, loud equipment, dirt, and other typical heavy-equipment repair conditions.
