Job Description

15+ Years Preferred | Dealership Experience | Diagnostics | Mentor Role We're looking for the technician people bring the difficult cars to. Vantacar is expanding our service and reconditioning operation in Owensboro, Kentucky, and we're looking for an experienced Master Import / European & Asian Diagnostic Technician to become one of the senior technical voices in our shop. We already have young, energetic technicians with ability and a desire to improve. We're looking for someone with the experience to take them further.
IMPORT EXPERIENCE MATTERS
We're specifically interested in technicians with significant dealership or specialty-shop experience involving European and/or Asian manufacturers. 15+ years of automotive experience is strongly preferred. Dealership experience is highly preferred. ASE Master Technician, manufacturer certifications and advanced diagnostic certifications are extremely valuable.
Experience with manufacturers such as:
Toyota / Lexus Honda / Acura Nissan / Infiniti Hyundai / Kia Subaru Mazda Volkswagen / Audi
BMW / MINI
Mercedes-Benz Volvo Other European and Asian manufacturers You don't have to specialize in every brand. Tell us what you know exceptionally well. If you spent 15 years at Toyota, we want to know. If you're a BMW diagnostic specialist, we want to know. If you've spent your career across multiple import brands, we want to know. We're looking for depth of knowledge, not someone pretending to know everything.
DIAGNOSTICS ARE CRITICAL
Anybody can replace a part after someone else tells them what's wrong. We need someone who can determine what's actually wrong. You'll be expected to work through: Electrical problems Network/CAN issues Intermittent faults No-start conditions Drivability concerns Engine performance Transmission issues Parasitic draws Sensor and module problems Charging systems HVAC diagnostics Mechanical failures Complex warning-light concerns We want someone comfortable with: Scan data Wiring diagrams Multimeters Scopes when appropriate Service information Technical bulletins Bidirectional controls Proper testing procedures We want diagnosis before parts replacement. The objective is getting the vehicle properly diagnosed the first time.
THE HARD CARS WILL FIND YOU
There will be times when another technician has spent hours on a vehicle and can't solve it. That's when we want your experience. Not necessarily so you can take the wrench away from them.
Sometimes your job might be:
"Come here. Let me show you how I'd approach this." That's how we want this shop to develop.
TEACH WHAT YOU KNOW
You've spent years acquiring knowledge through training, mistakes, difficult repairs and thousands of hours underneath vehicles. That knowledge has tremendous value. We want you using it. Help younger technicians learn how to think diagnostically. Teach them how to approach unfamiliar systems. Show them how to use service information. Explain why a test matters. Help them become faster because they're becoming better, not because they're cutting corners. Your legacy here shouldn't just be the vehicles you personally repaired. It should also be the technicians who became better because they worked beside you.
YOU DON'T NEED TO SELL THE CUSTOMER
This is primarily an internal technical position. We're building a service operation that complements a substantial used-vehicle retail business. You will not be hired to become a service advisor. You won't spend your day trying to sell customers maintenance packages. We want your attention on the vehicle. Inspect it. Understand it. Diagnose it. Repair it. Verify it. Document it. Move to the next problem.
PROFESSIONALISM IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
We understand technicians are human. Bad days happen. Difficult cars happen. Misdiagnoses happen. Parts arrive wrong. Bolts break. Things don't always go according to plan. What we won't accept is someone making the entire shop miserable because something went wrong. Technical ability does not give anyone permission to be toxic. We want someone mature enough to communicate professionally, help younger employees and maintain composure when things get frustrating. No ego competitions. No belittling people. No constant complaining. No refusing to help because something is "not my job." We want a professional whose attitude matches their ability.
WE ALSO EXPECT YOU TO KEEP LEARNING
Experience matters tremendously. But the automotive industry doesn't care how long you've been doing this. Technology keeps moving. Networks. Electronics. ADAS. Hybrid systems. EVs. Software. New powertrains. New diagnostic procedures. We respect 15-30 years of experience. We also expect you to remain curious enough to learn year 31.
WHO WE WANT
We're looking for someone who is: Highly experienced Exceptionally strong diagnostically Professional Positive Patient Reliable Organized Technically curious Willing to teach Willing to learn Comfortable helping others Proud of doing things correctly You don't need to be the loudest person in the shop. You don't need to prove you're smarter than everyone. Your work should do that for you.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're building something!!! The dealership already creates substantial internal service demand, and we're developing the infrastructure and management team necessary to handle it correctly. You'll work alongside our Service Manager, AGM/Inventory Operations Manager and our younger technicians. We want to combine their energy with your experience. That's a powerful combination when the right people are involved. We're not desperate to put someone in the position. We'd rather leave the position open than hire exceptional technical ability attached to the wrong attitude. But if you're an experienced import technician who enjoys difficult diagnostics, takes pride in your work, treats people professionally and would genuinely enjoy helping younger technicians develop—we want to talk to you. When applying, tell us: Which manufacturers are you strongest with? What certifications do you currently or previously hold? And what's one difficult diagnostic problem you've solved that demonstrates how you approach a vehicle other technicians couldn't figure out?
