That starts with knowing the true condition of every vehicle that enters the shop. A good vehicle inspection is not a box-checking exercise. It requires experience, mechanical awareness, attention to detail, and enough automotive knowledge to understand what you are seeing. We are hiring an experienced automotive technician whose primary responsibilities will be thorough vehicle inspections, oil changes, scheduled maintenance, and light-to-moderate repair work. This is not an entry-level lube technician position . We are not looking for someone who still needs to learn what to inspect, what normal wear looks like, or how the major systems of a vehicle work. We need someone who has already spent meaningful time in a professional automotive shop, has worked on a variety of makes and models, and knows how to observe, measure, document, and think through what is in front of them. You do not need to be a master diagnostician or an A-level technician. You do need enough experience to recognize a legitimate concern, explain what you found, distinguish a confirmed problem from a possible cause, and know when additional diagnosis should be recommended instead of guessing. More About the Company JC Motors is a 12-bay gdeneral automotive maintenance and repair shop in Tualatin. We work on most makes and models and see a wide range of maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs. We are the largest independent general repair shop in Tualatin, but we are still a family-run business where ownership is present and involved. JC Motors has been under new ownership over the last couple of years. It is owned by the same family that owns Mountain Tech, a respected independent Subaru specialist shop in Oregon City. We are bringing our company values and priorities to JC Motors to create a better customer and employee experience (something our industry desperately needs). We are not a dealership, a quick-lube chain, or a corporate operation where the decision-makers are several states away. When something needs attention, ownership and management are available. When a standard needs to be protected, management will back it. When someone is doing excellent work, that work is seen. We also hire carefully. We are not trying to fill this position with the first person who can hold a wrench or produce a polished resume. One technician's habits can affect the service advisors, the other technicians, our customers, and the reputation of the entire shop. We want the right person, not simply an available person. Why This Role Matters Our inspections are one of the foundations of the entire shop. A thorough inspection gives the customer an accurate understanding of the vehicle, helps the service advisor communicate honestly, allows repairs to be prioritized properly, and gives the rest of the shop better information when additional work is approved. The service department can only communicate as clearly as the information coming from the technician. "Brakes are bad," "front end is loose," or "there is a leak" is not enough. We need someone who can identify where the concern is, describe what was actually observed, include relevant measurements, take useful photos or video, and recommend an appropriate next step. The goal is not to turn every inspection item red or to sell everything that could possibly be replaced. The goal is to provide accurate information. Some findings require immediate attention. Some should be planned for soon. Some simply need to be monitored. Other concerns require additional diagnostic time before anyone should recommend a repair. The technician in this position must understand those differences. A strong inspection protects the customer from overlooked problems and unnecessary repairs at the same time. That is why this position requires judgment, not just the ability to follow a checklist. What This Position Is—and Is Not This position will primarily involve: Thorough digital vehicle inspections Oil and filter changes Tire rotations and routine maintenance Fluid and filter services Light-to-moderate mechanical repair work Basic testing and preliminary evaluation Quality-control checks and road tests when appropriate Clear documentation for our service advisors It is also not a trainee or apprenticeship position. We will train you on our procedures, software, workflow, inspection standards, and how JC Motors operates. You will have access to experienced technicians and management when you need support. However, we are not structured to teach fundamental automotive knowledge, basic inspection skills, or common repair procedures from the beginning. You must arrive already capable of performing the core responsibilities of the job. What We're Looking For We're looking for an experienced technician with strong inspection habits and solid mechanical awareness. This is not a basic lube-tech position. You should be able to thoroughly evaluate a vehicle, recognize common wear and concerns, understand basic automotive theory, and clearly document what you find. You should know the difference between: A confirmed failure A worn component A maintenance item A symptom that needs further testing A condition that should be monitored A concern that affects safety or reliability You do not need to know everything. You do need to recognize the limits of what you know and request further diagnosis instead of making an unsupported recommendation. The right technician can say, "This is what I found, this is the evidence, and this is the next step," without pretending to have confirmed something that has not been tested.
