Job Description

Performs maintenance, repairs, and inspections of Town vehicles and equipment or related work under the general supervision of the Fleet Operations Supervisor.
Shift:
Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM The set starting range for this position is $45,330 to $50,048 annually. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Performs preventive maintenance, problem diagnosis and repairs to automotive and light trucks, medium and heavy duty trucks as well as various types of construction/excavating equipment, tractors and mowing equipment. Performs diagnosis and repairs to gas/diesel engines, fuel systems, automatic/standard transmissions, front and rear axle assemblies, suspension systems, braking systems including air brakes, electrical systems, HVAC systems and hydraulic systems. Performs tire installations and repairs. Operates various types of garage equipment, specialized tools and diagnostic equipment. Complete Virginia state inspections. Opens job orders to record labor and parts used during maintenance/repairs. Assists in keeping the garage area neat and clean. Responds to road calls including afterhours call outs. Overtime work will be required as needed. General knowledge of garage equipment and tools used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of vehicles/equipment Ability to follow wiring diagrams, diagnostics and specifications Ability to follow oral and written instructions Knowledge of or the ability to learn welding and torch use Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, associates, and vendors Education and Experience High school diploma or GED certification is required 3 - 5 years of experience as an automotive/fleet/equipment mechanic/technician, or equivalent combination of education and experience ASE certifications preferred Special Requirements Qualified applicants will have a valid Virginia river's license with an excellent driving record. Possession of or the ability to obtain the following within one year: Commonwealth of Virginia State Inspector License Virginia Commercial Driver's License ( Class A or B)
Air Conditioning Certification Additional Requirements:
Selected candidate must have a complete set of tools for use on the job. The Town of Blacksburg provides a $900.00 annual tool allowance.
