Full-time or flexible depending on the right candidate About the Position We are a small, growing independent used-car dealership in Bethel looking for a capable, motivated automotive mechanic/technician to join us as we build the business. we also have 2 other shop locations for work. Royalton and Middlesex. This is not a repetitive dealership-line position where you work on the same make and model every day. We work on a wide variety of cars and trucks across different years, makes, and models. The work can range from brakes, suspension, steering, and general mechanical repair to diagnostics, engine replacement, electrical troubleshooting, welding, rust repair, and light body work. We are not necessarily looking for a master technician who knows everything . We are looking for someone useful, dependable, mechanically capable, willing to learn, and willing to tackle a wide variety of work. We are open to a solid mid-level technician, someone still developing their skills, or a more experienced mechanic who likes the atmosphere of a small independent shop. The more you can do, the more valuable you are to us, and compensation will reflect your actual ability. Responsibilities Diagnose and repair a wide variety of cars and light trucks Perform brake, steering, suspension, engine, cooling-system, and electrical repairs Use scan tools and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot vehicle problems Perform engine swaps and other larger mechanical jobs when needed Inspect vehicles and identify repairs needed to make them safe, dependable, and ready for sale Perform rust repair, including cutting, welding, patching, and repairing rust-damaged areas when capable Perform welding and basic fabrication Perform light body repair, paint touch-up, and cosmetic reconditioning when capable Handle multiple vehicles and repair jobs efficiently Communicate clearly about needed parts, repair progress, and additional problems found Maintain a clean and safe work area Work independently while also helping the rest of the team when needed What We're Looking For Automotive repair experience or strong mechanical ability Ability to diagnose problems rather than simply replace parts Comfortable working on many different makes and models Familiarity with automotive scan tools Strong work ethic and ability to work independently Dependable and able to stay productive without constant supervision A positive, solution-oriented attitude Good judgment and attention to detail Willingness to learn and take on unfamiliar repairs Dependable transportation to and from work Rust Repair Is an Important Part of What We Do We work in Vermont, and rust is simply part of the environment. A lot of shops prefer not to take on rusty body, frame, and structural repair. We do. Rust repair is one of the cornerstones of our business because it allows us to save and properly recondition vehicles that other shops may not want to deal with. That does not mean every mechanic we hire must walk in as an experienced rust-repair specialist. If you are primarily a mechanical technician and rust repair is not currently one of your skills, that alone will not disqualify you. What we do want applicants to understand is that rust repair, welding, fabrication, and structural repair are highly valuable skills here. If you already know how to do that work—or are interested in becoming good at it—you will have considerably more opportunity and value within the shop. If you have absolutely no interest in rust repair, you can still be valuable as a strong mechanical technician. But because this type of work is an important part of our operation, choosing not to develop those skills will naturally put a ceiling on how broad your role can become and how much value you can bring to the business. We are not looking to force someone into work they are uncomfortable doing. We are looking for people who understand the type of shop we are building and who see additional skills as an opportunity rather than a burden. A Word About Reliability and Attitude We run a small shop, so everybody here matters. We're looking for someone who shows up when they say they will, comes to work ready to work, has dependable transportation, and brings a good attitude with them. Nobody expects every day or every repair to go perfectly. Cars can be frustrating, parts can fight you, and some jobs turn into a headache. What we do expect is someone who can stay productive, communicate, solve problems, and work through frustrating jobs without turning the whole shop negative. We're not interested in judging what anybody does on their own time. What we do care about is what comes through the door with you in the morning. Frequent call-outs, showing up hungover or impaired, disappearing during the workday, repeated transportation problems, or bringing constant drama and negativity into the shop are not going to be a good fit here. This is also a smoke-free and vape-free workplace. If you are looking for a laid-back shop where being dependable, sober, productive, respectful, and generally good to work around is simply the normal expectation, you will probably fit in well. Strongly Preferred, but Not Required Engine replacement / motor-swap experience Electrical diagnostic experience Rust repair and welding experience Fabrication ability Body work and paint experience ASE certification or other professional automotive training Experience working in an independent repair shop or used-car dealership You do not need to already be an expert in every one of these areas. We would rather hire a dependable mechanic with a good attitude and solid fundamentals who is willing to learn than someone highly skilled who is unreliable or difficult to work with. Pay and Work Environment Pay is $30-$40 per hour based on experience, productivity, independence, and the range of work you can competently perform. This is straight hourly pay, not flat rate. We are a new and growing operation, so we do not currently offer the large-company benefits package that some established dealerships do. What we can offer is competitive hourly pay, flexibility, a small-shop atmosphere, variety in the work, direct communication with the owner, and the opportunity to become an important part of the operation as the dealership grows. We are not trying to be a large corporate dealership. We want to build a small team of capable people who work well together and take some pride in what leaves the shop. Why This Job Is Different This is a ground-level opportunity in a new dealership. You will not be one technician out of twenty or buried under layers of management. The right person will have the opportunity to take real ownership of the work, develop additional skills, and grow into greater responsibility as the business grows. There is plenty of variety. One day may involve suspension and brake work, another diagnostics or an engine job, and another may involve welding or repairing rust on a vehicle we are preparing for sale. If you like fixing things, solving problems, working on different vehicles, and seeing the results of your work directly, this may be a good fit.
