Automotive Service Writer — Brian's Automotive & Performance, Puyallup, WA Pay $25 an hour starting + sales commission on total percentage of sales Who We Are Brian's Automotive & Performance is an independent shop at 1134 E Main in downtown Puyallup, serving Puyallup, Tacoma, Sumner, and Pierce County since 2004. We do everything except body work — engine repair and full engine swaps, transmission work, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical and diagnostics, heating and cooling, oil changes and maintenance, pre-purchase inspections, and performance upgrades including tuning, exhaust, and custom installs. We're not a dealership and not a chain. Decisions get made in the shop by the people doing the work. Our Google rating is 4.8 across 148 reviews, and the word that shows up most in them is "honest" — customers regularly mention us finding a cheaper fix than what another shop quoted. That reputation is the thing we protect, and the service writer is the person who protects it. We also build our own shop software. The service writer uses those tools daily and has real influence on what gets built next. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00. Closed weekends. Job Summary We're hiring an automotive service writer. You'll be the main point of contact between customers and our technicians: taking in vehicles, writing estimates, explaining recommended work, and keeping customers updated until the job is done. The role suits someone with solid mechanical knowledge who can explain repairs in terms a customer actually understands. Duties Greet customers and get a clear picture of the vehicle's problem and what they need Write accurate, itemized repair estimates Explain recommended repairs and why they're needed — engine and transmission work, brakes, suspension, electrical, cooling, tires, and maintenance Recommend additional maintenance when the vehicle needs it, and be straight about what can wait Work with technicians to sequence repairs and keep jobs moving Keep accurate records: invoices, payments, and service documentation Keep customers informed on repair status Understand common vehicle systems well enough to relay diagnostic findings accurately Follow up on declined work and customers we haven't seen in a while Experience Prior experience as a service writer or in service management preferred Hands-on mechanic experience or diagnostic familiarity is a plus — it makes conversations with both technicians and customers easier Comfortable with shop management and estimating software Familiarity with maintenance intervals, engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, shocks and struts, and electrical diagnostics Interest in performance work is a plus — tuning, exhaust, and custom install customers ask harder questions than a typical maintenance customer Ability to recommend work honestly and build repeat customers
