Job Description
The River Falls School District is seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused School Bus Mechanic to maintain and repair the District's transportation fleet. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, and repairing approximately 35-40 school buses and 20 support vehicles, ensuring all vehicles operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with state and federal regulations. This is a full-time, year round position beginning approximately August 31, 2026. The ideal candidate takes pride in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, and keeping our students and staff safely on the road. Mechanics provide your own tools. Perform preventative maintenance inspections on school buses and District vehicles. Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and other vehicle components. Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Department of Public Instruction regulations. Prepare vehicles for annual inspections. Maintain and repair all District vehicles and equipment with wheels and motors, including school buses, vans, pickups, maintenance vehicles, grounds equipment, and other support equipment. Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues using diagnostic equipment. Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, inspection reports, and parts inventory. Coordinate repairs and maintenance schedules to minimize vehicle downtime. Order parts and maintain an organized shop and inventory. Respond to roadside service calls or emergency vehicle repairs as needed. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Follow all District safety policies, OSHA requirements, and manufacturer recommendations. Perform other duties as assigned to support Transportation and District operations. May need to drive school bus on an as needed basis Experience maintaining and repairing medium- or heavy-duty trucks, buses, or similar equipment. Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, brakes, hydraulics, and preventative maintenance practices. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems efficiently. Ability to work independently while prioritizing workload. Strong communication and organizational skills. Basic computer skills for maintenance diagnoses and parts lookup. Class A or B CDL License. Ability to obtain and maintain a Wisconsin Commercial Driver License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements, or obtain within a district-established timeframe. Candidates who do not currently possess a Class A CDL must be willing to obtain one within a timeframe established by the District. Assistance with obtaining a CDL may be available. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces. Ability to work in varying weather conditions and shop environments. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and vehicle lifts. Required application materials include a WECAN standard application and question set.
