Job Overview The Utility Maintenance Plumber maintains, repairs, and installs plumbing systems across municipal assets. This role is responsible for both public facility piping (city buildings, parks, and treatment plants) and underground utility infrastructure (water service connections, meters, and backflow preventers). The position ensures municipal water systems operate safely, efficiently, and in strict compliance with state and local plumbing codes.

Responsibilities Facility Maintenance:

Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing fixtures, water heaters, backflow devices, and drainage systems inside city hall, recreational facilities, and public parks.

Utility Connections:

Install, tap, repair, and maintain municipal water service lines, fire lines, and water meters up to the property line connection.

Leak Detection & Repair:

Locate and repair hidden leaks, broken water lines, and blocked sewer laterals using specialized diagnostic equipment, snakes, and hydro-jetters.

Code Compliance:

Ensure all installations, alterations, and repairs strictly adhere to local plumbing codes, ADA compliance, and cross-connection control regulations.

Preventative Maintenance:

Conduct routine safety testing on backflow prevention assemblies and commercial water systems within municipal buildings.

Heavy Equipment Operation:

Operate utility trucks, trenchers, and standard hand/power plumbing tools safely in public right-of-ways. Responds to after-hours emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements Minimum 3-5 years of journey-level commercial or industrial plumbing experience required. Public sector utility experience is a plus. High School diploma or equivalent required. Must possess a valid Journeyman Plumber License or state equivalent. Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification is highly preferred. A valid state driver's license with a clean record is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred. Experience with and knowledge of state and local plumbing codes. Strong understanding of OSHA safety protocols, including trench shoring, confined space entry, and PPE requirements. Deep knowledge of commercial and residential plumbing blueprints, pipe fitting, soldering, and drain cleaning methods. Proficiency working with various piping materials, including copper, PVC, PEX, galvanized steel, and ductile iron. Knowledge and experience in using and overseeing the operation of various hand and power tools. Knowledge of city streets and geography. Skill in dealing with the public. Skill in written and verbal communication.
