Portland Bolt & Manufacturing Co. has built its business on a philosophy of unparalleled service, quality products, and on-time delivery. Established in 1912, Portland Bolt manufactures large bolts and fasteners for construction projects worldwide — including high-rise buildings, bridges, power plants, and stadiums. With facilities across the U.S. and products shipped to all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and territories, and 31 countries, we are a growing, global organization rooted in manufacturing excellence. Our Portland facility is located minutes from the Pearl District.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Welder / Maintenance Technician keeps Portland Bolt's production equipment — much of it dating from the 1950s-70s — running safely and reliably, while also performing MIG welding and fabrication work that supports production output. The role is split between troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems (the majority of the position) and hands-on welding and fabrication, typically 25-40% of scheduled time, either building parts to support maintenance repairs or filling in directly on production runs. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, resourceful, and comfortable moving between maintenance calls, the weld shop, and the production floor as the day's priorities require.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Maintenance & Repair (majority of role) Troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain production machinery, including legacy mechanical equipment where manuals and OEM support are no longer available. Diagnose failures across bearings, gearboxes, drives, power transmission, hydraulics, pneumatics, and lubrication systems. Perform precision work — alignment, leveling, and fitting to close tolerances — using precision measuring instruments. Read and interpret blueprints and schematics, and reverse-engineer components when documentation doesn't exist. Support the preventive/predictive maintenance program and document work in the ERP system (Acumatica). Rig, move, and install equipment safely; operate overhead cranes and shop equipment. Welding & Fabrication (approx. 25-40% of role) Perform MIG welding to fabricate and repair machine parts and components when replacements can't be purchased or lead times are too long. Set up and operate fabricating equipment — cutters, saws, threaders, and headers — to produce or repair parts as needed. Weld and fabricate bolts, assemblies, and components — attaching heads, nuts, washers, and other parts to specification — in direct support of production. Lay out and inspect metal stock and workpieces prior to processing to verify specifications are met. Production Support (as needed) Step into production roles as demand requires, including operating plating/coating equipment and heating material in a forge for heading operations. Read and interpret work orders and production instructions to determine product specifications and material requirements. Operate a forklift and other material-handling equipment to support both maintenance and production work. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with facility safety standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of industrial maintenance, millwright, or mechanical repair experience in a manufacturing environment. MIG welding experience required; fabrication and basic machining competence (weld, cut, mill, turn) strongly preferred. Comfortable working independently and prioritizing between maintenance calls, fabrication work, and production support needs. Proficiency with precision measurement instruments, hand and power tools, and blueprint reading. Ability to read and follow work orders and production documentation accurately. Forklift experience or certification a plus; we will certify the right candidate. High school diploma or GED required. Preferred Experience in fastener, forging, casting, or heavy-metal manufacturing.
CMMS / ERP
maintenance documentation experience (Acumatica a plus). Hydraulic and pneumatic system rebuild experience. Welding certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work in a shop/production environment for the full shift. Ability to lift and position materials and equipment; experience with cranes or lifting equipment required. Exposure to heat, noise, welding fumes, and industrial manufacturing conditions — PPE required and provided.
