Non-Exempt Essential Functions Under general supervision, the Maintenance Technician performs and assists with a full range of building maintenance activities, including new construction, repairs, routine maintenance, and remodeling of existing spaces. The position assists with and occasionally performs renovations and repair work in a variety of facilities, including buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolding, frames, fences, and other structures. The Maintenance Technician supports and maintains facilities across all Coastal Bend College locations, as assigned, and must maintain the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position safely. Job Duties and Responsibilities Ensure proper care, safe operation, and maintenance of various equipment, machinery, and hand and power tools, including, but not limited to, power saws, drills, painting equipment, and air compressors. Maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties. Perform shop clean-up and maintain a safe and clean work area daily. Properly wear assigned personal protective safety equipment (P.P.E.) and uniforms. Identify building maintenance problems and report unusual problems or difficulties to the supervisor. Ensure that work orders are completed. Perform building maintenance, repair, and emergency services as needed. Assist in the repair, renovation, or replacement of existing windows, doors, walls, ceilings, floor tiles, and baseboards. Respond to emergency calls on weekends and evenings. To perform minor work requests, repairs, and perform urgent repairs to doors, windows, floors, and ceilings. Install signs, display boards, blinds, fixtures (soap and paper goods dispensers, etc.), and repair furnishings (tables, chairs, desks, lab benches, etc.). Open and close classrooms, offices, or buildings as assigned on monthly door schedules. Assist all physical plant staff, maintenance, custodial services, grounds, HVAC, trades, and mechanical services staff and the college community in the accomplishment of their work (projects, events, ongoing programs). Interdepartmental work is an essential function of this position and will require effective collaboration with Information Technology (IT), Campus Police, and other College departments as needed. Perform other related duties necessary and within the general scope of regular and preventive maintenance tasks related to the maintenance technician position as assigned by the Director in support of the College and Facilities services. Qualifications Education High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Minimum Qualifications General experience in woodwork, wood and metal wall construction, roofing repairs, minor concrete work; drywall tape, float and texture, painting, various types of general repairs and maintenance. Must know safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead-containing materials, etc.). Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and make callouts; work well with others and follow written or oral instructions. Must possess a good work ethic and pride in workmanship. The ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations, and to recognize, secure, and report unsafe conditions immediately. Prior experience at a school district, college, or a similar higher education environment, or a large multi-building facilities environment preferred. Bilingual ability preferred. Must possess a current Texas driver's license or obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire. Supplemental Information Other Duties Will participate in Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Will participate in College responsibilities such as Committees and task forces. Travel Requirements 25% of the time will require travel to other Coastal Bend College Campuses as needed. Travel during evening and weekend hours may be necessary as required by the College. Environment Most work takes place throughout all college campus facilities, which exposes employees to inside and outside elements such as dirt, fumes, noise, chemicals, and all types of weather conditions on a daily basis. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, move, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools, machinery, or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties will involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on a regular basis and up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating tools, equipment, or machinery such as a computer keyboard, mouse, power saws, and drills, painting equipment, forklifts, tractors, and similar machines.
