10/01/2026 POSITION PURPOSE The Utility Maintenance Technician I supports reliable water and wastewater services by performing entry-level field, maintenance, metering, and customer-service work under close supervision. This position assists experienced employees with installations, repairs, inspections, plant activities, and utility operations while developing knowledge of applicable tools, procedures, safety practices, and regulatory requirements. Through teamwork, careful attention to instructions, and responsive service, this position helps protect public health and maintain essential City infrastructure. Service Delivery & Community Impact Performs field-service and maintenance tasks that support reliable water and wastewater services. Performs routine meter reads, field data collection, service connections and disconnections, and other assigned metering services. Responds courteously to residents and customers, provides accurate information within assigned authority, and refers complex matters appropriately. Operational Excellence & Program Management Assists with installing, programming, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing advanced metering infrastructure water meters, meter boxes, and related components. Assists with installing, repairing, and maintaining water and wastewater lines, services, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure. Supports plant operators with routine water and wastewater plant activities and compliance-related tasks within the employee's training and authorization. Completes work orders, meter records, service documentation, inspection forms, and other required records accurately and timely. Participates in rotating on-call assignments, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required. Collaboration & Relationship Building Works as part of a crew and coordinates effectively with supervisors, experienced technicians, plant operators, customers, and other departments. Problem Solving & Decision Support Conducts routine site and equipment inspections and promptly reports needed repairs, unsafe conditions, or operational concerns. Identifies and reports meter tampering, unauthorized use, suspected theft of service, leaks, hazards, and other irregular conditions. Continuous Improvement & Innovation Learns and applies utility procedures, tools, safety practices, and regulatory requirements to improve technical capability and service reliability. Emergency Operations Serves in an essential capacity during emergencies, disasters, and catastrophic events and may be assigned duties outside normal responsibilities to support public safety and continuity of City operations. Performs related duties assigned in support of City operations.

Preferred TCEQ Water or Wastewater Operator license, Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT), Customer Service Inspector (CSI), Wastewater Collection license, or other utility-related license or certification applicable to the employee's assigned duties.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver license and acceptable driving record. Must successfully complete required pre-employment screenings, including criminal background, drug and alcohol screening, and physical examination or fitness-for-duty evaluation, as applicable. May be required to obtain and maintain an applicable TCEQ license or other utility-related certification, such as Water or Wastewater Operator, BPAT, CSI, or Wastewater Collection, based on assigned duties and operational needs. Must be available to work overtime, on-call rotations, weekends, holidays, and emergency response assignments as operational needs require. Must comply with all City safety policies, required training, and personal protective equipment requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in office, field, plant, and utility-system environments. The employee is regularly required to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, use hands and tools, and communicate effectively. The employee may be required to lift and move equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment. Work may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, dust, chemicals, biological hazards, confined spaces, uneven terrain, moving equipment, and other hazards associated with water and wastewater operations. Required personal protective equipment must be used. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
