Commuter Cars & Trucks is looking for an experienced Senior Automotive & Diesel Technician with strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic abilities. We are looking for a technician who has real-world experience—not someone who simply follows a diagnostic tree or replaces parts based on a fault code. The right person has worked on enough vehicles to recognize common failure patterns, understand what is likely to fail next, and diagnose the actual root cause of a problem. Our shop services a wide range of used vehicles, including diesel and gasoline cars, trucks, SUVs, and 4x4s. While diesel experience is a major part of this position, there will also be times when the technician is working on gasoline-powered vehicles and performing general automotive repairs. This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable with everything from routine maintenance to difficult mechanical, electrical, and computer-related problems.
Responsibilities:
Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline vehicles Perform complete mechanical diagnostics and repairs Service and repair engines, transmissions, cooling systems, fuel systems, brakes, steering, suspension, drivetrains, and 4WD systems Perform preventative maintenance and general automotive service Diagnose complex electrical and electronic problems Read and understand factory wiring diagrams and electrical schematics Diagnose wiring harnesses, connectors, terminals, pins, sensors, actuators, and circuits Diagnose ECM/PCM/TCM and other vehicle module communication problems Diagnose CAN-bus and vehicle network communication issues Use professional scan tools and diagnostic equipment Troubleshoot difficult and intermittent electrical and drivability problems Perform proper wire harness and connector repairs Diagnose vehicles that have been previously modified or improperly repaired Perform aftermarket truck modifications and installations Install and service lift kits, leveling kits, suspension components, wheels and tires, and other aftermarket equipment Diagnose and service diesel emissions systems, including DPF, DEF, EGR, SCR, NOx sensors, and regeneration systems Diagnose fuel contamination and high-pressure diesel fuel-system problems Work on Ford Power Stroke, GM Duramax, and Ram Cummins platforms Identify secondary or impending failures that may not be part of the original complaint Inspect vehicles and determine the complete scope of repairs needed Use experience and judgment to determine whether a repair makes financial sense before unnecessary parts and labor are invested Complete repairs efficiently while maintaining a high standard of workmanship Document diagnostic findings and completed repairs accurately
What We Are Looking For:
We are looking for a technician who has been around the block. You should have enough real-world experience to recognize the difference between a simple repair and a vehicle with an underlying problem that could turn into a much larger repair. You understand that fixing the original complaint is not always the end of the diagnosis. You know the common failure patterns of different engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and vehicle platforms and know what should be inspected before a vehicle leaves the shop. Diesel experience is strongly preferred, but you must also be comfortable diagnosing and repairing gasoline-powered vehicles.

Ford, GM, and Ram diesel platforms Gasoline cars, trucks, and SUVs Advanced mechanical diagnostics Advanced electrical diagnostics Computer and module diagnostics Wiring harness, connector, and terminal/pin repair Scan tools and diagnostic equipment Drivability diagnostics 4x4 and drivetrain systems Suspension and lift installations Aftermarket truck modifications Diesel fuel-system diagnostics Vehicles with previous modifications or poor-quality repairs Identifying known or predictable failure patterns
Qualifications:
5+ years of professional automotive/diesel technician experience preferred Strong diesel and gasoline automotive experience Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic abilities Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams Ability to diagnose problems independently Professional diagnostic scan-tool experience Own professional hand tools Valid driver's license ASE certifications and OEM training are a plus, but proven experience is more important than certifications
Compensation:
Competitive flat-rate pay based on experience, diagnostic ability, and productivity. We are willing to pay for the right technician. If you are the technician other technicians come to when they can't figure something out, and you have the experience to diagnose the problem before throwing parts at it, we want to talk to you.
Pay:
$35.00 - $45.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 - 75.0 per week People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply
