15+ Years Preferred | Dealership Experience | Diagnostics | Mentor Role We're looking for experience that can't be taught in six months or in 5 years. Vantacar is expanding our service and reconditioning operation in Owensboro, Kentucky, and we're looking for an experienced Master Diesel Technician / Diagnostic Specialist to become one of the senior technical voices in our shop. We already have a group of young, intelligent, high-energy technicians who want to learn. What we need is someone who has spent years solving the problems they haven't seen yet. Your primary value here isn't how quickly you can fire the parts cannon. It's knowing how to determine what's actually wrong.
WE WANT A DIESEL SPECIALIST
We're specifically looking for a technician with extensive experience diagnosing and repairing diesel vehicles and trucks. 15+ years of automotive experience is strongly preferred. Dealership experience is highly preferred. ASE certifications, manufacturer certifications and Master Technician credentials are extremely valuable. We are particularly interested in experience involving: Ford Power Stroke GM Duramax Ram/Cummins Diesel fuel systems Turbocharger systems Emissions systems DEF/SCR systems DPF systems Electrical diagnostics CAN/network communication No-start conditions Intermittent electrical problems Drivability concerns Engine performance Transmission/drivetrain diagnosis We don't expect anyone to know everything. We do expect a Master Technician to know how to figure things out.
DIAGNOSE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
Diagnostics will be one of your most important responsibilities. We don't want: Guess. Replace. Test. Guess again. Replace something else. Repeat.
We want:
Verify the concern → understand the system → test → isolate the failure → confirm the diagnosis → repair → verify the repair. You will frequently be given the vehicles other technicians haven't been able to solve. That's intentional. We want someone who enjoys difficult problems.
YOU'RE ALSO HERE TO TEACH
Knowledge becomes significantly more valuable when you can transfer it. We have young technicians with ability, energy and ambition. Part of your responsibility will be helping develop them. Show them why you're testing something. Teach them how to read wiring diagrams. Explain the diagnostic path. Show them how you eliminated possibilities. Teach them the mistakes you've learned from during your career. Help them understand the difference between replacing a part and diagnosing a system. We aren't asking you to give away 15+ years of knowledge. We're asking you to become the kind of technician younger technicians are fortunate to learn from.
NO SERVICE WRITING. NO SELLING CUSTOMERS.
This role is different from many dealership technician positions. Your primary customer is our operation. We currently have substantial internal inventory requiring diagnosis, repair and reconditioning. You will not be expected to spend your day selling repairs to the public, explaining labor hours to customers or chasing customer-pay work. We want you focused on vehicles. Diagnose them. Repair them. Help us make intelligent repair decisions. Help other technicians. Get vehicles fixed correctly. Public-facing service will eventually become part of our service operation, but this position is designed primarily around technical expertise—not customer sales.
EXPERIENCE DOESN'T EXCUSE ATTITUDE
This is extremely important to us. We want a Master Technician—not a master ego. We're not interested in someone who has tremendous technical ability but makes everyone around them miserable. No constant negativity. No screaming. No throwing tools. No belittling younger technicians. No "I've been doing this for 25 years, so nobody can tell me anything." No poisoning the shop when you're having a bad day. We're adults. We're professionals. We can disagree. We can challenge each other. We can make mistakes. But we treat people with respect. Your maturity should match your experience.
WHAT WE WANT IN THE SHOP
We want someone who is: Highly experienced Diagnostic-minded Patient Professional Positive Dependable Organized Productive Cost-conscious Willing to teach Still willing to learn Comfortable with technology Capable of admitting when they don't know something Proud of their workmanship We want younger technicians looking at you and thinking: "That's the level I want to reach."
Not:
"That's what I never want to become."
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're building a service department, not simply filling another bay. You'll work alongside our Service Manager, AGM/Inventory Operations Manager and existing technicians to establish a much stronger internal diagnostic and repair operation. There is a substantial amount of work already here. We're looking for someone who wants to bring years of accumulated knowledge into an environment where that knowledge will actually matter. If you're an experienced diesel technician who still enjoys solving difficult problems and wants to help build the next generation of technicians, we want to talk to you. When applying, tell us: What diesel platforms do you know best? What certifications do you currently or previously hold? And what's one diagnostic problem you've solved that other technicians couldn't figure out?
