This is not a role where someone needs to be managed every hour. We want a mechanic who shows up every day, identifies what needs attention, makes sound repair decisions, communicates clearly with operations, and takes pride in keeping equipment safe, reliable, and working. Our work supports demolition, underground utilities, excavation, hauling, trucking, and dumpster operations throughout Metro Detroit. The fleet may include heavy-duty trucks, trailers, dump trucks, tractors, excavators, loaders, skid steers, attachments, and related support equipment. The opportunity This position is ideal for an experienced diesel mechanic who wants more responsibility, more variety, and the ability to run their work without dealership-style micromanagement. You will have the opportunity to help build and improve Peterson Brothers' maintenance operation. That means helping set preventive-maintenance priorities, identifying recurring equipment issues, organizing repairs, recommending parts and upgrades, reducing downtime, and making sure our fleet is ready to work when the field needs it. We value practical judgment. If something needs to be fixed, we want someone who can diagnose the issue, explain the repair, get the needed parts, complete quality work, and keep operations informed. What you will do Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks, trailers, dump equipment, and construction equipment. Perform preventive maintenance and inspections to reduce unexpected breakdowns and protect equipment life. Troubleshoot diesel engines, air brakes, suspension, steering, driveline, hydraulic, electrical, cooling, charging, and starting systems. Complete DOT-related truck and trailer inspections, repairs, and maintenance as applicable. Repair and maintain heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, attachments, forklifts, and other jobsite equipment. Diagnose hydraulic leaks, cylinder issues, pumps, valves, hoses, fittings, and related systems. Perform routine work including oil changes, filters, brakes, tires, lights, batteries, belts, hoses, wheel-end repairs, and component replacement. Use diagnostic tools, wiring diagrams, service manuals, and schematics to accurately troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues. Weld, fabricate, and modify components when needed to keep equipment safe, functional, and job-ready. Safely operate equipment, trucks, trailers, forklifts, and shop tools as needed during inspection, repair, or testing. Maintain clear service records, repair notes, inspection documentation, and parts information. Communicate upcoming repair needs, downtime concerns, safety issues, and recommended maintenance priorities to the operations team. Help maintain an organized, safe, clean, and professional shop and yard environment. Take ownership of your work, follow repairs through to completion, and make decisions that protect the fleet and keep jobs moving. What we are looking for Proven experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic, truck and trailer mechanic, fleet mechanic, heavy-equipment mechanic, or dealership technician. Strong hands-on knowledge of Class 7-8 trucks, trailers, diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and preventive maintenance. Experience working on construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, attachments, and related machinery is strongly preferred. Ability to independently diagnose problems rather than only replace parts. Comfortable reading wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, service manuals, and technical information. Strong troubleshooting ability with diesel, electrical, hydraulic, and air systems. Welding and fabrication experience is a plus. Ability to safely use diagnostic equipment, power tools, hand tools, shop equipment, lifting equipment, and welding tools.

CDL, ASE

certifications, DOT inspection experience, or OEM training are preferred but not required for the right person. A valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to work safely around heavy trucks, trailers, equipment, moving machinery, and an active construction/trucking yard.
