Job Description
Job description J&L Contracting is seeking an experienced diesel mechanic to perform minor and major repairs on the company fleet vehicles. Must have a full understanding of how to properly maintain commercial motor vehicles according to DOT regulations and is crucial to the safe and productive operation of the company fleet. Duties and responsibilities Evaluate mechanical and electrical problems in diesel vehicles using diagnostic equipment Assist or perform rebuilds, replacements, or repairs of major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including, but not limited to, engines, transmissions, suspensions, hydraulics, brake systems, tires, exhausts, etc. Road test vehicles to troubleshoot problems and/or test repairs to ensure proper and safe completion Check and repair electrical and cooling systems and install heaters and similar accessories Help maintenance technicians evaluate minor mechanical problems, and inspect repairs completed Read and interpret VCR's (vehicle condition reports) and/or repairs orders, communicates with supervisor and/or driver for clarification of problems; may discuss preventative techniques with drivers to minimize future repairs Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care Maintain accurate, updated preventive maintenance records Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to company safety procedures, and follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company and OSHA Standards, ensuring shop equipment and tools are in safe operating condition Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately Perform other job-related duties as assigned Education/Experience Knowledge of all tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on vehicles Ability to independently make decisions, follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of the company fleet Ability to recognize unacceptable waste (such as gasoline or other flammable materials) Knowledge of DOT, OSHA and other state and federal regulations Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers Strong work ethic, demonstrating integrity and trust while motivating others Ability to prioritize workload and meet time sensitive deadlines Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills Ability to read, write, and comprehend reports and associated documents Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Flexibility to accept and adapt to change as well as the commitment to seek continuous improvement Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operation, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects (repetitively) Knowledge of proper lifting techniques Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures Pay based on experience
