Job Description

TITLE:

School Bus Mechanic

FLSA STATUS

Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate or equivalent. One year of experience in vehicle maintenance/repair. Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements and drive a bus when called upon to do so.

Lead Mechanic or Shop Supervisor

JOB GOAL

To ensure the safe transportation of children and equipment for Cumberland County Schools by repairing and maintaining the operating condition of automotive equipment and driving a bus when called upon to do so.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Diagnoses and performs minor vehicle repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance procedures in accordance to state guidelines.
  • Acquires certifications to perform North Carolina 30-day inspection of vehicles.
  • Performs duties of fuel truck driver as needed.
  • Obtains and maintains CDL bus license.
  • Completes the pre-trip and post-trip inspection.
  • Drives a bus when called upon to do so while maintaining proficiency in driving skills.
  • Maintains bus route schedule.
  • Maintains discipline and reports undisciplined students to school administration.
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops and transports only authorized students.
  • Complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations.
  • Reports delays and accidents.
  • Cleans the interior of the bus.
  • Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.

Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform heavy lifting exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) when requested.
