Job Description

Position:
Locomotive/Diesel Mechanic About Us:
The West Tennessee Railroad has been in operation since 1984 and is one of the largest short line freight railroads in Tennessee. The main rail yard is in Jackson, TN and provides service to nearly 40 customers in West Tennessee. Our mechanics maintain a fleet of 14 locomotives as well as several other pieces of large equipment to ensure safe and reliable service daily.
Responsibilities:
Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair locomotives and mechanical components, including engines, brakes, fuel systems, and air systems. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and FRA-mandated inspections. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues and implement timely repairs. Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Ensure all work complies with FRA, OSHA, and AAR safety and regulatory standards. Collaborate with train crews, supervisors, and management to minimize downtime and keep locomotives in service. Operate shop equipment, tools, and diagnostic systems safely and effectively. Support special projects, rebuilds, and overhauls as assigned.
Qualification:
High school diploma or equivalent (technical school or certification in diesel/locomotive mechanics preferred). 2+ years of mechanical experience in locomotive, heavy equipment, or diesel engine repair. Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics, technical manuals, and work orders. Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in outdoor and shop environments in varying conditions. Commitment to workplace safety and teamwork.
Preferred Skills:
FRA 49 CFR
Part 229 inspection experience. Welding, fabrication, or hydraulics experience. Previous railroad or heavy equipment industry experience. Strong problem-solving and time-management skills.
