Utility Technician

Job Description Position Purpose:
Operate utility construction equipment to dig and backfill excavations for installation, operation, maintenance and repair of water utility facilities. Installs, maintains, repairs and operates water utility facilities and grounds by performing responsibilities assigned.Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Knows and abides by company's safety policy and procedures. Provides excellent customer service to all external and internal customers. Perform all duties of Competent Person in Charge on excavations. Operate excavation equipment (backhoe, excavator) and forklift as required. Perform routine and preventative maintenance on excavation equipment and forklift and maintain accurate records of such activities. Install new or replacement water mains, services, meters, and fire hydrants with all associated appurtenances. Repair, maintain and/or operate water transmission and distribution system facilities, buildings, grounds, and associated equipment, i.e., mains services, meters, fire hydrants, valves, etc. Use and maintain all work equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, i.e. jack hammer, air compressor with related tools, tapping machines, portable ditch pumps and electrical generators, pipe locating and leak detection equipment, hand tools, etc. Use accepted practices and methods of water facilities and appurtenances installation or replacement and their proper operation, maintenance and repair. Perform excavations and restorations related to operation, maintenance and repair of water system. Perform hydrant and blow-off flushing, flow tests, leak surveys, and water line locating functions. Keep accurate daily records of work performed, time worked and materials used. Must be able to respond to emergencies after hours, and to participate in after-hours on call duty rotation. Perform foreperson job duties on occasion as required.Work Environment:
Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.Qualifications Education/Experience/Background:
High School Diploma/GED is required. 1 year experience in backhoe excavation operations. Utility locating experience.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Good mathematical skills, including ability to calculate volumes and pressures. Ability to read and interpret maps. Ability to read, speak, converse and give directions. Ability to understand policies and procedures relating to utility II duties.Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
Must possess a valid New Jersey State driver's license. Must be certified in CPR and First Aid. Competent Person certification required. Backhoe and Forklift operational and safety training required.Physical Requirements:
Ability to drive to job site, walk for extended periods on flat and uneven terrain, climb, bend and stoop. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and on occasion up to 100 lbs.Additional Information Pay Rate:
$27.48 per hour.Benefits:
