Job Description

Walter Solutions is a controls and automation shop in Mentor. We build control panels, retrofit machinery, install safety systems, commission drives, and keep production equipment running for manufacturers across Northeast Ohio. Right now that's one person, the owner. This is the seat next to him, and it's a senior one. This role is for someone who's already capable and doesn't need to be built. You walk into a customer's plant, own the job from the first phone call to the close-out report, and become the person that customer asks for by name the next time something goes down. After two or three weeks learning our customers, our standards, and where our scope stops, you run jobs on your own. What the work looks like Service calls at customer facilities, start to finish. Intake, diagnosis, repair, verification, and a written report the same day. Troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control faults on live production equipment while a plant is losing money by the hour. Going online with a PLC to trace logic and force I/O until you find root cause, instead of throwing parts at it. Building and wiring control panels from schematics. Power distribution, control transformers, breakers, terminal blocks, PLC and I/O racks, drives, safety relays. Mounting panels, enclosures, and field devices at customer sites. Running wireway and conduit. Pulling and terminating control voltage wiring, encoder and analog cable, and industrial network cable, to a standard that reads clean when somebody opens the door two years from now. Writing and modifying PLC programs. Building and editing HMI screens. Commissioning VFDs under load. Installing and functionally verifying safety systems, including light curtains, safety relays, interlocked guarding, two-hand controls, and e-stop circuits. Start-up and functional testing with the customer standing there, then training their operators and maintenance on what changed. And the part nobody puts in a job posting: telling a plant manager the truth about what's wrong, what it costs, and what happens if he waits. We work on the load side of the machine disconnect. Process equipment and its wiring. We don't do building distribution or service entrance work. If a customer asks you to feed, move, or modify a disconnect, that comes back to the owner. It doesn't get done on the spot. Most days are day trips within driving distance of Mentor. You're home at night. Fewer than fifteen overnights a year, with per diem when you do travel. What you'd grow into This is the senior technical seat in a company that's growing. As we add field staff, the path from here is technical lead: setting the standards, reviewing other people's work, and directing techs on site. What we're looking for Five or more years of hands-on industrial controls, automation, or field service work in manufacturing. You can walk into a plant you've never seen and troubleshoot production equipment without a senior tech on the phone. You read and mark up schematics. You build panels to print and to a standard you'd put your name on. You can go online with a PLC on at least one major platform, trace logic, make edits, and manage backups. You've configured HMIs. You've set up and commissioned VFDs. You can bend conduit, lay out wireway, and mount and wire devices in the field. You know electrical safety practice, lockout/tagout, and test-before-touch. You carry yourself well in a customer's plant, and you escalate instead of improvising. Valid license, insurable driving record, reliable vehicle. You can lift fifty pounds, work from ladders and lifts, and spend your day in an active industrial environment. A two-year technical degree in electrical, automation, or mechatronics, or the experience that proves you didn't need one. Helps, but won't disqualify you: Allen-Bradley (RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, PanelView), AutomationDirect, CODESYS, Keyence, cobot and robot integration, machine safety design and validation, press controls and die protection, servo and motion systems, machine vision, AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks, legacy control system migration, and any experience quoting work directly with customers. Pay and benefits $40.00 - $ 45.00 /hour, non-exempt. Overtime at time and a half over 40. Four-hour minimum on any callback. Health reimbursement of $300/month toward the plan you choose. 80 hours PTO, accruing from day one, available at 90 days. 11 paid holidays. $50/month phone allowance. Mileage reimbursed at the IRS rate. Per diem on overnight travel, meal allowance on qualifying day trips. Tools, test equipment, and PPE provided. Training and manufacturer certifications paid for. Reviews at 90 days and 12 months. The 12-month is the first scheduled pay conversation. To apply Send a résumé, or just tell me what you've worked on. The machine everybody had given up on, the intermittent that took three visits, the retrofit you finished over a shutdown weekend. That's what I want to hear about.
