$37.53 - $43.51/hourly [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-6] The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Mechanic I position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under moderate supervision from the Mechanic Supervisor, the Mechanic I performs skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of City vehicles and equipment, including light trucks, construction equipment, and small engines. This position ensures fleet reliability through preventive servicing, mechanical troubleshooting, and the use of modern diagnostic tools and technologies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of automotive, diesel, and equipment systems, including engines, brakes, electrical, hydraulic, suspension, and small engine repair. Skill in diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems using diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and troubleshooting techniques. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and repair on light- to heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, and small engines safely and efficiently. Strong understanding of shop safety practices, OSHA regulations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection documentation while managing multiple priorities. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team in changing environmental conditions.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent. Automotive trade school or equivalent. Minimum two (2) years experience in the vehicle repair industry required.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age. Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver's License within 90 days of hire and obtain Alaska Bush CDL Class "B", including medical certification. Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law. Successfully pass a background check, which includes criminal background, reference, CDL, and drug test. Ability to work in conditions inherent to an industrial environment with loud noise; perform work in adverse weather and occasionally work non-traditional hours. Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
