January 28, 2025 Under general direction the Heavy-Duty Mechanic I classification is responsible for repairing, maintaining, rebuilding, and troubleshooting machinery, mechanical equipment, engines, pumps, motors, generators, vertical turbine pumps, right angle gear drives, and related equipment. The Heavy-Duty Mechanic I will accomplish this by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned not listed in this job description.

• Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and related problems on engines, pumps, gear-drives, drivelines, generators, filtration systems, gas systems, air compressors, and related equipment.

Operates, monitors, interprets and controls SCADA. Installs valves connected to water distribution system. Rebuilds and overhauls engines and related equipment.

• Understands and interprets readings on complex engine control systems.
• Performs scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance tasks and checks at pumping plants: daily, weekly, monthly, annually, and adheres to a weekly schedule. Maintains cleanliness of job sites and plants.
• Performs alignment of pump assemblies, shafts, drive couplings, engines and gear drives. Recognize and diagnose engine, pump, and gearhead vibration issues.
• Performs repairs and maintenance on service trucks and off-road equipment.

Takes precision measurements and records data as it pertains to engines, equipment, and appurtenances. Maintains maintenance records of servicing and engine repairs. Works directly with department supervisors and managers to accomplish goals Informs supervisor of day to day production and maintains quality control of finished product Performs all duties in a professional workman-like manner to industry standards. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships and professional communication with co-workers, outside agencies, vendors, contractors, and public.

• Works as scheduled on-call mechanic, responds to alarms, phone calls, text messages and monitors SCADA remotely. Performs emergency repairs as needed, including working weekends, holidays and overtime. Respond to emergencies and plant outages. Be on rotating 24-hour scheduled on-call during pumping season.
• Attends safety meetings, follows all district safety policies, standards and regulations.

Required to always wears proper P.P.E.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Associate's Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; relevant professional experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, mechanical diagrams, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively, understand and carry out oral and written directions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense to carry out work, with or without detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Continues training as needed for required job skills. Maintain and operate a district vehicle in a safe manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions with exposure to the sun, hot and cold temperatures, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. Work involves exposure to dust, lubricants, chemicals, oils, grease, solvents, and cleaning solutions. Some work is done on ladders and other surfaces above the ground. Occasional work on slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Pay:

$35.48 - $43.12 per hour
