Field-based — Colorado job sites and BME yard Position Summary Black Mountain Excavation is looking for an experienced Field Mechanic - Heavy Equipment to keep our fleet of heavy construction equipment operating safely and efficiently. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, haul trucks, water trucks, and other construction equipment. The ideal candidate is a dependable, self-motivated mechanic who can work independently in the field, troubleshoot problems quickly, and get equipment back into production with minimal downtime. Essential Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing on heavy equipment. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine problems. Perform field repairs on construction equipment and vehicles. Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and determine the cause of failures. Repair and replace hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinders, pumps, valves, and related components. Perform engine repairs and maintenance, including diesel engines. Diagnose and repair electrical systems, wiring, starters, alternators, sensors, and controls. Perform brake, steering, suspension, and drivetrain repairs as needed. Complete oil changes, filter replacements, grease services, fluid checks, and inspections. Conduct equipment inspections and identify potential problems before they result in breakdowns. Respond to equipment breakdowns at BME job sites. Coordinate with operators and project managers to understand equipment issues. Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, parts, and labor. Keep service truck, tools, parts, and work areas organized. Maintain inventory of commonly needed parts, filters, hoses, fittings, and supplies. Follow BME safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Assist with larger shop repairs and equipment rebuilds when needed. Work overtime, evenings, weekends, or emergency call-outs when necessary to support active projects. Equipment Experience Experience working on several of the following is preferred: Excavators Wheel loaders Skid steers Dozers Motor graders Compactors/rollers Articulated haul trucks Water trucks Dump trucks Backhoes Forklifts and miscellaneous construction equipment Qualifications 3+ years of heavy equipment mechanic experience preferred. Strong knowledge of diesel engines and heavy construction equipment. Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical systems. Ability to diagnose equipment problems accurately and efficiently. Ability to read hydraulic schematics and electrical diagrams. Own basic mechanic hand tools. Valid driver's license. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to safely lift, carry, climb, bend, kneel, and work around heavy equipment. Must be willing to travel between BME job sites. Must be dependable and responsive when equipment breakdowns occur. Preferred Qualifications Heavy equipment or diesel mechanic certification. Experience with Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi, or similar equipment. Welding and fabrication experience. Experience with hydraulic system repairs. Experience using diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting equipment. CDL or ability to obtain a CDL. Experience working for an excavation, grading, civil, or heavy construction company. The employee must be able to safely perform mechanical repairs in both shop and field environments.
