JOB SUMMARY

Performs skilled work related to equipment operation and operates a variety of specialized heavy equipment to facilitate the construction and maintenance of all facets of County roads and bridges as directed by the Road and Bridge Supervisor or Operator/Shop Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Prepares and maintains records, reports, and work areas. Safely operates a variety of specialized heavy and light equipment as needed to facilitate the construction and maintenance of all facets of County roads and bridges. Builds and maintains roads, loads, and transports materials or equipment. Performs daily inspections (annual DOT, etc.) and preventive maintenance on all commercial and county-owned vehicles and equipment. Performs commercial vehicle maintenance as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Participates in appropriate training programs to maintain required certifications and increase skill levels. Communicates concerns and issues to the Road and Bridge Supervisor and/or Human Resource personnel.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and/or ability to safely operate and perform routine maintenance on various types of heavy and light construction, and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of road construction and maintenance materials and methods. Ability to apply safety policies and procedures to various work environments and situations. Ability to understand and apply county policies, understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to take initiative and make good decisions, identify and correct problems on the job site. On the job training and certification available.

TRAINING AND/OR EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED. Must possess valid unrestricted Colorado State Class A Commercial Driver's License or obtain within 6 months of hire. Must be able to pass required Department of Transportation physical and pre-employment drug test with a negative result, and pass a background investigation. Subject to random drug/alcohol testing to meet Federal Motor Carrier requirements of the position. Must be able to achieve Newly Hired Experience Minor Record/Certificate within I year of employment. Must have a valid certificate of flagging within I year of employment date and must be able to maintain certification of flagging while employed with Huerfano County. Must have a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must be able to withstand extended exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is routinely required to work with the hands in handling, seizing, holding, or grasping motions and picking or pinching actions to operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk and hear, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

This position may be assigned to report to duty at any Road and Bridge shop location, including the Waste Transfer Station. May be required to operate rock crushing equipment. Working hours may vary including shift work, holidays, and weekends. The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.
