This position performs journey-level work with minimal supervision, and production control of workflow. Mechanical work includes maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of automobiles, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, aerial bucket trucks, tractors, loaders, graders, compressors, and other equipment. Work involves the responsibility for inspection, evaluation, and repairing the mechanical conditions of all types of motorized equipment. This shall include final road testing (when applicable) to ensure the accuracy of the work performed. Work is performed under minimal supervision and reports to the Fleet Maintenance Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The position is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repair on a wide variety of fleet vehicles and equipment, including brake systems, engines, transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems, fuel systems, drivetrains, and other mechanical components. Duties include conducting preventive maintenance, diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues using diagnostic equipment, completing metal fabrication and welding tasks, preparing vehicles and equipment for auction, and researching maintenance histories before performing major repairs. Accurate documentation of repairs, labor, parts, and materials used is required through detailed work orders.
In addition to repair responsibilities, the position assists in maintaining shop equipment, keeping the shop and parking areas clean and organized, and performing field repairs as needed. The employee may serve on a rotating on-call schedule, work overtime or alternate hours to support departmental operations, and assist in training Mechanic I and Mechanic II employees. The role also includes performing other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the fleet maintenance division.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a strong knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostic technologies across a wide range of vehicles. Understands preventive maintenance practices, fleet management systems, and applicable regulations such as DOT, OSHA, and environmental standards.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with four years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive or heavy equipment. Completion of automotive vocational or technical coursework is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Candidates must possess a valid Florida Driver's License, a valid Class "B" CDL within 90 days of employment and a minimum of four ASE certifications or equivalent qualifications in light- and/or heavy-duty vehicle specialties. The position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and other hours as necessary.
