Job Description

Overall oversight of the Heavy Duty shop. Manage and direct the activities of other heavy duty mechanics. Responsible for the satisfactory performance of both scheduled and unscheduled service work. Must have ability and willingness to make difficult decisions. The regular hours of work are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. In addition, this position performs essential snow and ice control operations and will be on a 24 hour on-call status. Ability to perform work of considerable difficulty in supervising and as a participating worker within the operations of the Heavy Duty Shop. Must be dedicated to quality, efficiency, and service. During snow and ice callouts work as a mechanic or snowplow operator. Ability to lead and direct staff. Bill out parts on work orders using fleet maintenance software. Customer service oriented. Provide specifications for purchasing equipment, shop tools, trucks, construction equipment, and trailers. Perform all duties in accordance with County safety code and established safe work practices. Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to plan and execute on strategies. Effective problem solver. Knowledge and experience of International, Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, Freightliner, Case, Allison automatic transmissions, Bendix and Wabco brake systems, and Detroit diagnostic equipment Knowledge of equipment electronic system diagnostics Knowledge of diesel and gas engines and transmissions Knowledge of wire welders, "stick" type welders Knowledge of hydraulic systems and hose replacement Knowledge of machine shop tools and equipment Ability to operate single axle trucks, tandem axle trucks, and semi tractors with standard and automatic transmissions Knowledge of basic automotive electrical circuits, relays, diodes, capacitors and how to use them Education and/or Other Requirements Completion of a standard high school program or equivalent. Must possess a Class B Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes; Class A Preferred Minimum of ten years of experience maintaining and repairing diesel trucks and equipment. Minimum of five years of experience working on Tier 4 emissions. Minimum of two years of related work experience in welding of vehicles and equipment. Experience in computer software including Excel, Word, Outlook, databases, and fleet management.
Physical Requirements:
Individual should have the ability to perform difficult physical labor and to regularly lift and/or carry objects weighing 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds The position is exposed to extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic; moving machinery; and other extreme hazards Ability to work long hours day or night Lake County offers a competitive salary and benefit package.
