Mechanic I•
Environmental Services Department Pay Range:
$27.28•40.92/hour
Anticipated Starting Rate:
$27.28•31.26/hour The City of O'Fallon is seeking a dependable and skilled Mechanic I to join our Environmental Services Department. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the City's fleet-especially heavy‑duty refuse trucks-and ensuring safe, reliable operation of vehicles and equipment that support essential public services. Position Overview The Mechanic I performs maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. This includes heavy‑duty trucks, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and specialized refuse equipment. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety‑focused, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment with diverse repair needs. Key Responsibilities Receive and assess vehicle and equipment complaints Diagnose mechanical issues and determine repair needs Repair and rebuild engines Perform welding and fabrication work Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems Repair hydraulic and air pressure systems Perform brake repairs and replacements Evaluate and replace alternators and starters Repair and replace tires Conduct oil and hydraulic oil changes Perform general preventative maintenance Maintain assigned tools and equipment Maintain a clean and safe work area Manage inventory and cost control for parts and supplies Complete purchase order requests Transport vehicles to contract repair providers Prepare required reports and maintain related records Operate a truck along an assigned route, as assigned Perform other related duties as needed Preferred Experience CDL Class B with airbrakes (required or ability to obtain. Paid training available) Previous refuse truck repair experience strongly preferred Hands‑on experience with: Welding Electrical troubleshooting Brake repair and replacement Hydraulic diagnostics and repair Preventative maintenance on heavy‑duty trucks Inventory and parts management Knowledge & Skills Required Knowledge of City and departmental policies, including safety regulations Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures Knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, electrical, and brake systems Skill in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment Skill in using tools and equipment associated with vehicle repair Strong oral and written communication skills Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED Ability to read, write, and perform basic math Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Missouri driver's license appropriate for assigned equipment CDL Class B with airbrakes (or ability to obtain within required timeframe) Why Work for the City of O'Fallon?
