Job Description

Position OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Commercial HVAC Retrofit Specialist to lead and execute retrofit, change-out, and replacement projects for commercial HVAC systems. The role focuses on installing, upgrading, and commissioning equipment to improve performance, efficiency, and reliability while ensuring compliance with codes and project specifications.

Key ResponsibilitiesPerform installation, replacement, and change-outs of commercial HVAC equipment including rooftop units, air handlers, chillers, and condensing units.

Execute retrofit projects from site assessment through startup and commissioning, ensuring systems meet performance targets and owner requirements.

Read and interpret mechanical drawings, plans, and specifications; coordinate with engineers, contractors, and facility owners.

Install and connect sheet metal ductwork, piping, fittings, controls, and electrical components per drawings and applicable codes.

Conduct field testing, balancing, and commissioning activities; troubleshoot and resolve operational issues during startup.

Ensure work is completed safely and in compliance with OSHA, local codes, and company safety policies; maintain a clean and organized job site.

Provide clear progress reports, documentation, change order recommendations, and as-built records.

Coordinate with project managers to maintain schedules, material deliveries, and subcontractor activities.

Train and mentor junior technicians and apprentices on best practices for retrofit and change-out procedures.

Support warranty follow-ups and perform preventive maintenance recommendations to extend system life and efficiency.

QualificationsMinimum 5 years of hands-on experience in commercial HVAC installation, retrofit, and change-outs.

Proven experience with startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems and controls.

Skilled in sheet metal work, piping, brazing/soldering, and mechanical assembly.

Familiarity with refrigeration systems, chillers, boilers, pumps, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).Knowledge of mechanical codes, safety regulations (OSHA), and commissioning standards.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and control sequences.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and project teams.

Valid drivers license; HVAC certifications (EPA, HVAC/R) or trade licenses preferred; union experience a plus.
