Mechanical Technician We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to support the development of custom equipment, fixtures, tooling, prototypes, and manufacturing systems. This is a hands-on, 50/50 design and mechanical implementation role . Approximately half of the position will focus on mechanical design and documentation using SolidWorks , while the other half will involve prototyping, equipment assembly, installation, fitting, troubleshooting, testing, and design refinement . The ideal candidate can take an engineering concept, sketch, or preliminary layout and turn it into a complete, manufacturable design ready for fabrication, procurement, assembly, and deployment. Strong practical mechanical design experience and hands-on problem-solving ability are valued more highly than a specific degree or educational background. What You'll Do Develop complete mechanical designs from sketches, concepts, engineering direction, and preliminary layouts. Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, fabrication drawings, and assembly documentation using SolidWorks. Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) , part specifications, revisions, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks PDM. Select and specify purchased components, standard hardware, and commercially available equipment. Work with procurement, supply chain, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and vendors to source components and equipment. Communicate directly with machine shops, fabrication vendors, and equipment suppliers regarding specifications, quotes, and technical requirements. Apply sound mechanical design principles related to tolerancing, fits, GD&T, manufacturability, assembly, material selection, and maintainability . Produce manufacturing-ready drawings and documentation for internal fabrication teams and external suppliers. Participate in prototype construction, equipment assembly, fitting, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting . Verify designs through hands-on fit-up, inspection, testing, and assembly. Identify design issues and make modifications based on real-world testing and equipment performance. Support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities. Participate in design reviews and collaborate with engineers, technicians, manufacturing personnel, and suppliers to resolve technical issues. Maintain accurate documentation, revision control, and drawing standards throughout the project lifecycle. Required Qualifications Minimum high school diploma or equivalent; degree is not required. 5+ years of proven hands-on mechanical design and/or equipment development experience. Demonstrated ability to create complete mechanical designs, manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation for custom equipment, tooling, fixtures, machinery, or automation systems. Strong proficiency with SolidWorks , including: Part modeling Assembly modeling Detailed drawings Design detailing Experience with SolidWorks PDM or a similar engineering document management system . Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including: Tolerancing and fit selection GD&T fundamentals Constraint-based design Assembly methods Material selection Manufacturability and fabrication practices Experience creating and managing BOMs and purchased component specifications . Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to assemble, modify, troubleshoot, and improve mechanical systems. Experience using common precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, and height gauges . Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and make sound practical decisions. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with some of the following is highly desirable: Custom manufacturing equipment Tooling and fixtures Automation systems Prototype development Production or process equipment Laboratory or process-development equipment Machine shops and fabrication environments Equipment installation and commissioning Familiarity with industrial mechanical components such as: Linear bearings and gui
