Handyperson/General Maintenance

Job Description

DEFINITION
: Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, learns to perform and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in the maintenance, limited construction, or repair of City buildings, facilities, and equipment; performs other related duties as required. Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Maintain, repair, and install various items for City buildings, facilities, parks, and equipment. Maintain, repair, and installs electrical wiring and lighting circuits in connection with the repair or alteration of buildings, equipment, and facilities; troubleshoot electrical malfunctions making necessary repairs; replaces ballasts, fluorescent tubes, and bulbs. Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains heating and ventilation equipment; maintain air conditioning equipment; performs limited air conditioning repairs. Prepares surfaces for painting; apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, or other protective finishes to various surfaces. Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of water, heating, and drainage systems. Maintenance and repair of concrete and flooring such as wood, linoleum, carpet, or tile. Repair or replace leaking and defective roofing using materials such as roll roofing, roof coating, primer sealers, flashing, and roofing tiles. Obtain quotes for services beyond the ability of the position. Maintain proper maintenance logs and asset management. Establish positive working relationships with maintenance contractors, representatives of community organizations, state and local agencies, City management, Staff, and the public.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND five years' work experience demonstrating progressive responsibilities for specialized tools, equipment and documentation; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at work sites throughout the City; required to perform skilled technical repair and maintenance work, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Must be able to work extended hours, weekdays, and holidays as needed, and respond to emergency callouts. May be required to travel to various sites, locations and/or events. Team members are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours; team members are required to assume duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
