Job Description
The City of Goleta Public Works Department has an exciting opportunity to support the department while gaining knowledge and experience in Public Works maintenance as a Maintenance Assistant . This is a seasonal and temporary position that may work no more than 999 hours per July-June fiscal year. The department's preference is for this position to work full time, however there may be an option for part time hours given the right candidate.
The following duties are typical for positions in this classification. Incumbents may not perform all listed job functions, nor are all listed duties necessarily performed by everyone in this class depending upon business needs and changing business practices: Learns to and participates in park maintenance duties, including pulling weeds, raking recreation areas, watering plants and trees, and sweeping. Learns to make minor equipment repairs; learns to perform routine vehicle maintenance and equipment safety inspections. Picks up litter from park grounds; empties trash containers. Maintains cleanliness by emptying trash cans, cleaning restrooms, and assisting in facility upkeep to ensure safety and appearance. Assists in maintaining and repairing streets, parks, and open spaces, including cleaning storm drains, catch basins, and walkways; replacing signs; repairing fences; removing graffiti; and weed abatement. Learns to and uses power and hand tools for routine maintenance. Assists with periodic painting or carpentry work on City facilities; assists with equipment set-up and other physical arrangements. Loads and unloads supplies, including the lifting of heavy objects. Utilizes cellular phones for field communication. Maintains logs of daily activities. Assist in preparing the City for special projects and events. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. Typical work activities may include:
assisting with pothole repair, sign installation, debris removal, vegetation management, traffic control, painting, pavement striping, trash and graffiti removal, irrigation repairs, operating hand tools and small power equipment, concrete repairs, restroom cleaning, and minor park equipment repairs.DEFINITION

High school education or equivalentExperience:
Six months of experience in a related position that required driving a pick-up truck, van, or other heavy vehicle and in safely lifting and carrying heavy objects.Knowledge and Abilities Ability to:
Follow oral and written instructions. Safely drive a pickup truck. Safely lift and carry heavy objects. Learn and follow safety practices and procedures. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Special Requirements Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record may be required.PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents are required to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.Environment:
Ability to be exposed to inclement weather and conditions, including cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibrations, chemicals, and mechanical and electrical hazards.Other factors:
