Position Summary The Facility Maintenance Assistant reports to our Facility Operations Manager and is responsible for maintaining the facility, grounds, and equipment in a clean and well-functioning manner, providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests, volunteers, and fellow staff. Duties & Responsibilities Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following: Handle minor repairs to buildings and zoo areas to meet AZA standards. Perform a variety of regular, routine preventative maintenance tasks. Complete work order requests for maintenance and repairs by the requested date. Conduct regular maintenance inspections on various types of equipment. Schedule and deliver CuriOdyssey's two vehicles for outside-vendor tune-ups. Procure materials and supplies regularly. Work with the Custodian to track projects, work orders, and daily cleaning tasks. Meet and escort vendors around the building as needed. Perform other work duties as required, including occasional flexible hours. The position also requires up to two hours per day of light gardening and upkeep of outdoor exhibit and garden areas, which may include: Conducting morning and evening walkthroughs of outdoor exhibit and garden areas, collecting, cleaning, and resetting tools, props, and materials. Maintaining natural structures such as woven fencing and sculptural elements by adding and reweaving branches or sticks as needed. Checking and maintaining water features, fountains, and irrigation systems, and creating watering/irrigation schedules. Collecting fallen branches and maintaining branch piles for ongoing repairs. Raking or blowing outdoor play and garden spaces as needed. Maintaining compost areas, including turning piles and adding material. Inspecting and cleaning exhibit and garden signage. Picking up litter and trash in outdoor areas during morning and evening rounds. Identifying and reporting damaged exhibit elements to the Exhibits team. Knowledge, Skills & Attributes A basic skill level in one or more building maintenance fields (e.g., carpentry, HVAC, plumbing) is required. Multiple areas of experience or expertise are desired. Ability to think critically, creatively, independently, and with common sense in all work. Ability to follow written and oral instructions; skillfully use hand and power tools across a variety of building trades; quickly learn new maintenance and repair methods; perform heavy physical labor as needed; and complete checklists and inspection reports. We are seeking a skilled candidate who is polite, mannerly, and respectful to all, and will be cognizant that we serve children and their families and need to act and speak accordingly. Will be checked out and/or trained on all tools and equipment at the location. Ability to maintain accurate records via online computer systems. Demonstrated awareness of OSHA safety, security, and compliance practices. English fluency required. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required. Education & Experience Any combination of education and experience equal to two to five years of recent building and grounds maintenance experience, including landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and HVAC maintenance. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Work involves moderate to heavy labor in all types of weather, with frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), climb ladders, and perform similar actions throughout the workday. Noise level is moderate to high; work takes place in a public space with temperatures that vary by season, both indoors and outdoors. Work pace can vary from sedate to very busy, requiring frequent multitasking, teamwork, and the ability to think on your feet. Occasionally involves moving between departments to support the whole team, and occasionally dealing with frustrated guests.
