Job Description

Work Schedule :
Normal work schedule is Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm. Saturdays will be required as needed. Nature of Work The Assistant Superintendent is a working supervisory position responsible for assisting with the daily operation and maintenance of the cemetery. The position supervises and performs skilled, manual, and seasonal work involving grounds maintenance, burials, equipment operation, building and infrastructure maintenance, and other cemetery operations. Working under the direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent assists with supervising maintenance staff, coordinating daily work assignments, interacting with families and funeral professionals, and ensuring cemetery grounds, facilities, vehicles, and equipment are properly maintained. The Assistant Superintendent assumes designated responsibilities of the Superintendent in their absence.
Essential Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. The Assistant Superintendent performs a combination of supervisory, operational, and customer-service responsibilities in support of the daily operation of the cemetery.
Essential functions include:
Assists the Superintendent in overseeing daily cemetery maintenance and operational activities. Supervises maintenance staff, assigns daily work, coordinates schedules, and monitors the completion and quality of assigned work. Provides guidance and training to employees and promotes safe and efficient work practices. Assumes designated responsibilities of the Superintendent in their absence and assists with resolving day-to-day operational issues. Coordinates and communicates with families, funeral directors, monument companies, contractors, and other outside parties regarding cemetery services and operations. Assists families with the selection and purchase of burial and cremation property and completes required documentation and records. Utilizes cemetery management software and cemetery records to locate burial sites, verify information, and assist with daily operations. Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment, including excavation and grounds-maintenance equipment, as required. Participates directly in cemetery maintenance activities, including grounds maintenance, burials, snow removal, building maintenance, and other seasonal or operational work. Monitors the condition of cemetery vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment and assists in coordinating routine maintenance and minor repairs. Estimates materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete assigned projects and daily operations. Ensures cemetery equipment and property are used safely, responsibly, and in accordance with established procedures. Maintains a high standard of professionalism and customer service when interacting with families, visitors, funeral professionals, and the public. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent. Required Qualifications Grounds maintenance experience in a commercial setting such as landscaping and snow removal, are a must . Prior cemetery experience is strongly preferred. Experience in operating excavation equipment such as mini excavators and front loaders. Experience in operating power equipment such as zero-turn mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, etc. Mechanical ability to execute minor to moderate repairs and maintenance on buildings and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to proficiently use a computer and experience in Microsoft Word. Prior experience in sales and customer service is highly preferred, but we are willing to train if other qualifications are met. You must be a self-starter and able to work with little supervision once proper training has been provided. Special Requirements A valid Connecticut driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are required. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate as required for the operation of cemetery vehicles. Physical Requirements The physical demands and working conditions described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier objects with appropriate assistance or equipment. Must be able to safely enter, exit, and operate trucks, tractors, excavation equipment, mowers, and other cemetery vehicles and machinery. Must be able to work safely on uneven terrain, slopes, around excavations, and in other outdoor cemetery environments. Must be able to perform work outdoors in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity, and other seasonal conditions. Must be able to wear and properly use required personal protective equipment. Must be able to perform both field and office duties, including the use of computers and other standard office equipment.
