General Maintenance Laborer LTC II/Landscape•Parks Department
LOCATION
Lafayette Parks and Recreation; Maintenance division
HOURS:
M-F 7:00am•3:00pm Full-time; Days, evenings, weekends and some holidays may be required.
SALARY:
$1708.08•1960.30 bi-weekly Description Incumbent serves as General Maintenance/Landscape for the Parks and Recreation Department. Incumbent participates in all aspects of landscape maintenance and installation for all parks and properties of City of Lafayette. Performs landscape maintenance of assigned parks and grounds such as bed edging, mulching, pruning, plant removal, installation, fertilization, insect/fungus treatments, mowing, trimming, removing leaves, trees and limbs, general landscaping and snow removal. Performs additional landscaping duties such as grading slopes, seeding, and removing tree stumps. Perform essential landscape maintenance such as upkeep of planters and planting beds, trim, prune, or deadhead flowers and clean flower beds, plant seeds, bulbs, shrubs, perennials, grasses, ground covers, or trees and apply mulch using appropriate tools. Operates various hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws chainsaws, axes, gas shears, or pruners. Incumbent may also operate equipment such as skid loader, backhoe, forklift, dump truck, and snowplow in effecting the general maintenance and safety of parks and grounds. Regularly checks and ensures proper maintenance of Department equipment, tools and vehicles. Keeps Department equipment, tools and vehicles clean and reports repairs. The ability to mix/spray/ spread, fertilizers, herbicides, and/or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders. Must also maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used and ensure that proper safety precautions are observed when working with chemicals. Ability to follow planned landscape designs and use the appropriate tools such as architectural rulers, tape measure, measuring wheel and/or laser level to implement landscape plan. Assists in maintaining buildings and other structures, such as shelters, bridges, and buildings, including painting/patching walls, and making minor electrical, plumbing and carpentry repairs, such as unclogging toilets, changing light bulbs and ballasts, and repairing signs. Assists in installation of playground equipment.
REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age, and high school diploma or GED required. Education or experience, or both, in landscape maintenance, preferred. Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification. Possession of or ability to obtain Indiana Core pesticide applicator license within specified time period. Must possess valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record. Ability to operate all equipment in the Department, including but not limited to, snow removal equipment, mowing equipment, and various excavation tools ranging from hand tools to motorized equipment. Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, standing/walking for long periods of time, working in awkward positions for long periods of time, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than fifty pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing mechanical sounds, and close vision. Must be able to work outdoors with exposure to various elements of the outdoors. Must possess a positive professional appearance, demeanor and attitude, and work harmoniously with all contacts in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner. Must possess ability to thrive in a team-setting amidst frequent distractions and interruptions. Must enjoy working around children in a recreational setting. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City departments, vendors, customers, and the public including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
