Maintenance Grounds Worker Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, custodial/maintenance work, construction, or a related field preferred. Knowledge of basic groundskeeping, landscaping, lawn care, and athletic field maintenance practices. Ability to safely operate and perform routine maintenance on groundskeeping equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, snow removal equipment, and other power equipment. Ability to operate hand tools and basic maintenance equipment safely and appropriately. Ability to perform physical work for extended periods, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, or as required by the position. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established safety procedures. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and prioritize assigned tasks. Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with students, staff, administrators, contractors, and members of the public. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining safe and attractive school grounds. Valid Michigan driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred/required, as applicable to District needs. Ability to obtain and maintain any required certifications or licenses related to assigned duties. Successful completion of all District-required pre-employment and background screening requirements.

The Maintenance Grounds Worker is responsible for maintaining the District's grounds, athletic fields, landscaping, and outdoor facilities in a safe, clean, attractive, and functional condition. This position performs a variety of routine and skilled grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, snow and ice removal, athletic field maintenance, litter removal, and general outdoor maintenance. The Maintenance Grounds Worker works independently and as part of the Facilities/Maintenance team to ensure that school grounds and outdoor areas are properly maintained and safe for students, staff, families, athletic programs, and community use. The position may assist with building maintenance, special events, athletic activities, and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Mow, trim, edge, and maintain lawns and landscaped areas throughout District properties. Operate groundskeeping equipment, including riding and push mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, edger's, snow blowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and other assigned equipment. Perform routine inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance of groundskeeping equipment and report equipment problems or repair needs to the appropriate supervisor. Maintain athletic fields, including mowing, lining/marking fields, repairing turf, removing debris, and preparing fields for athletic events and activities. Maintain trees, shrubs, flower beds, gardens, and other landscaped areas, including pruning, planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and other routine landscaping activities. Remove leaves, branches, litter, debris, and other materials from school grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields, and outdoor areas. Perform seasonal grounds maintenance activities, including spring cleanup, fall cleanup, landscaping, and preparation of grounds for winter weather. Perform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and other designated areas using appropriate equipment and materials. Apply salt, sand, or other approved ice-melting materials in accordance with District procedures and safety requirements. Inspect outdoor areas for hazards and promptly report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, vandalism, or needed repairs. Maintain playgrounds, outdoor structures, fencing, bleachers, athletic areas, and other grounds-related facilities as assigned. Assist with the setup, maintenance, and cleanup of outdoor areas for athletic events, school activities, community events, and other District functions. Assist with moving, loading, unloading, and transporting equipment, materials, furniture, and supplies as needed. Assist Maintenance staff with minor repairs and general facility maintenance tasks within the scope of training and assigned responsibilities. Maintain work areas, equipment, tools, vehicles, and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Follow all District policies, procedures, OSHA requirements, safety practices, and manufacturer guidelines when operating equipment and performing assigned duties. Properly use and store fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning products, fuels, and other materials in accordance with District procedures and applicable safety requirements. Maintain appropriate records, work orders, inspection logs, and other documentation as required. Respond appropriately to weather-related conditions, emergency situations, and urgent maintenance needs. Communicate effectively with supervisors and other Facilities/Maintenance staff regarding work completed, equipment concerns, supply needs, safety hazards, and other issues. Maintain confidentiality regarding District and student information encountered during the performance of assigned duties. Provide professional and courteous service to students, staff, families, visitors, contractors, and community members. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Facilities, Maintenance Supervisor, or designee.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed while standing, walking, sitting, and moving throughout District facilities and outdoor grounds. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. Requires frequent use of hands and arms for grasping, gripping, handling, operating tools and equipment, and performing fine and gross motor tasks. Requires frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, reaching, twisting, and working in various body positions. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials, tools, equipment, and other objects weighing up to 75 pounds . Requires the ability to work for extended periods outdoors and in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and changing temperatures and humidity. Requires activities involving exposure to moving machinery, motorized equipment, vehicles, and other mechanical hazards. Requires exposure to dust, dirt, pollen, fumes, gases, fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning products, and other materials commonly associated with grounds and maintenance work. Requires the ability to safely operate and work around groundskeeping, maintenance, and snow-removal equipment. Requires the ability to walk over uneven terrain, grass, gravel, pavement, and other outdoor surfaces. Requires sufficient physical stamina and mobility to perform assigned duties safely and efficiently.
