In this position, you will support the planning, enhancement, and long-term care of public landscapes and natural areas— installing new plantings, caring for trees, managing invasive species, and coordinating the safe removal of diseased or hazardous trees. You will also ensure residents receive accurate, helpful guidance by serving as a knowledgeable resource for landscape and tree-related inquiries. Seasons change, so do responsibilities - your skills set will extend to snow control and seasonal park upkeep. Perform urban forestry and park maintenance functions with primary emphasis on forestry and landscape maintenance. Forestry/Landscape Performs the implementation of municipal landscape and forestry projects including site analysis, plant species selection, plant purchase, site preparation and layout, tree, shrub and perennial installation, fertilization, irrigation, mulching and weed control within City parks, public facilities and boulevards. Performs ongoing plant maintenance activities including pruning, fertilization irrigation and other horticultural treatments related to the maintenance of ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Safely drive and operate various trucks, compact construction equipment, aerial bucket truck, and other motorized vehicles as needed to perform essential job functions. Performs required maintenance on landscape and forestry related equipment, including a variety of power and hand tools. Constructs and installs park hardscape features, such as retaining walls, planting beds, boulder walls and irrigation systems. Performs trimming, and maintenance of public trees within parks, public facilities and boulevards. Performs park and trail maintenance activities including tree removal, grading, invasive plant management, grubbing and chipping operations. Assists in maintaining the City's Computerized tree/landscape inventory management system including date collection and input. Assists with implementation of the City's shade tree disease control program. Provides information for the preparation of educational articles, promotional items, technical reports, grant application, and public inquiries. Assists with wildlife, prairie, and/or aquatic resources management projects and programs. Parks Maintenance Maintains outdoor hockey and pleasure skating rinks and winter facilities including base preparation, flooding, shaving, lining and snow removal. Participate in snow and ice control efforts in parks, at City Facilities including parking lots, walks and trails, assists with snow removal from streets as required. Assists in the installation of parks improvements, such as play equipment, landscaping, recreation facilities and structures Performs a variety of trails maintenance tasks such as trail sweeping, snow removal, crack filling, patching, signing and seal coating. Performs ongoing routine parks maintenance activities, such as mowing and trimming, infield maintenance, athletic field layout and striping, waste removal, tennis court and basketball inspections, and building janitorial services. Performs turf maintenance tasks including fertilization, aerification, de-thatching, seeding, sodding, weed spraying, topdressing, and irrigation installation and repair. Identifies public hazards or liabilities in parks and responds in a timely and appropriate manner. Conducts preventive maintenance and performs repair work on park equipment, vehicles and other small equipment. Assists in the preparation of park and City facilities for schedules recreation activities and special events. Other Position Functions Attends schools and seminars relating to landscape, forestry, and parks maintenance. Provides on-the-job work direction and/or training to seasonal employees, park volunteers, contractors, or outside work groups as required or requested. Helps other City maintenance divisions as assigned in response to emergencies, special requests or to balance seasonal workloads. Performs minor system or mechanical repairs on buildings and recreation-related facilities. Answers public inquiries and directs visitors to park facilities and athletic fields. Provides information and answers questions related to landscape, forestry, and park maintenance operations. Other duties as requested or may be obvious and/or necessary to provide City services. What is required for this position? High school diploma or G.E.D. Must be 18 years of age. Must have a two-year technical or vocational degree in Landscaping, Urban Forestry, Forest Resource Management, Horticulture, Park maintenance, or a closely related field, OR four years of a demonstrated combination of equivalent knowledge gained through a similar work experience, OR served 6 months as a City of Eagan Maintenance Trainee. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (Interstate, Category 1 or 2) with air brake and tank endorsement within 180 days of hire. A four-year college degree in Landscape Design/Maintenance, Urban Forestry, Forest Resource Management, or a closely related field. Previous experience in landscaping, or parks maintenance. Possession of Minnesota Pesticide Applicator's License. Considerable experience in the installation and maintenance of large landscapes in a public or commercial setting.Knowledge of:
Occupational hazards of work and necessary job-related safety precautions. Good mechanical aptitude and experience in performing maintenance and repairs on related forestry equipment. Various biotic and abiotic plant disorders. Plant identification, both in the growing season and in the dormant season.Skills in:
Sustainable landscape practices. Pollinator Habitat development and maintenance. Problem-solving and troubleshooting.Ability to:
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other city department personnel, volunteer groups, residents, and other professionals. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Work independently and complete assigned duties in a productive and effective manner. Supervision This position may occasionally provide on-the-job training or oversight of seasonal employees including landscape crew laborers, forestry technicians, park attendants, ball field attendants, seasonal maintenance personnel, volunteers and community groups. This coordination responsibility may occur during regular day hours or evening and weekends as required.Physical Requirements Work Category:
Medium-Heavy In an 8-hour day the employee will: Sit 1-3 hours Stand 2-3 hours Walk 4-5 hours This position requires the ability to stand and walk constantly, except when snow plowing and HEO duties. Employees must be able to tolerate frequent amounts of awkward positions (bending, twisting, low level work, etc.) and walking on uneven terrain. Team or mechanical assistance if heavier than 75 lbs. usually, but sometimes the workspace does not allow two people in the area. Working Conditions Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. This position will be required to occasionally work before and/or after normal working hours or weekend hours to provide for the ongoing maintenance and maintenance of the City Parks and Recreation system and general City operations. This may include seasonal shift changes that will involve extended alternative schedules including late night and early morning hours such as may be required for winter rink maintenance. The position is expected to respond to off hour call outs in a timely manner. FLSA non-exempt position. Up to 90% Field 10% Office. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or keyboards, speak intelligibly, hear and read.
